The Navajo Code Talkers

For those who were not aware of the Code Talkers, this book was an excellent first source once the information was declassified in 1968. As far as accuracy, I can assure the readers that the material is very accurate, as my father was one of the major sources quoted in the book. He was with the 4th Signal Company, Headquarter Bn, 4th Marine Division, and made all four campaigns that the 4th Marine Division was engaged in. As a squad leader, he worked with quite a few of the Navajo Code Talkers. He was always impressed with their dedication to the job, even when under heavy enemy fire. Please note that the movie "Windtalkers" was very inaccurate in regard to the Code Talkers and the battle of Saipan (the Code Talkers were never guarded as in the movie, with orders that they be shot if captured - however, they often had Anglo's with them since they were often suspected as being Japanese). Hopefully the Eastwood movie coming out soon, and based on "Flags of our Fathers", will be more accurate. Enjoy the book!

Resource for the new movie WINDTALKERS

I work for the publisher of this book. There aren't a lot of our books that I get a chance to read, but this one has been a best-seller for 25 years now. So, of course, I have also read and enjoyed it. I'm pleased to spread the word that this book was a resource for the upcoming MGM movie, WINDTALKERS. Of course, the movie is a story, but the book is a historical account of how the intelligent, fierce-fighting Navajos became an invaluable resource to our military during WWII. Indeed, they helped go a long way toward swinging the tide of the war in the favor of the US.

`The Navajo Code Talkers' was originally written in 1973 by Doris A. Paul. The text remains highly relevant today. As a former Marine it was very easy to relate to the transition from civilian life the Navajos experienced when entering boot camp. To make matters much worse for them, the Marine Corps way of instant willing obedience to orders and strict discipline was an extreme departure from their life on the open range of the reservation. Still, these Navajos felt a deep sense of duty to a country that had not treated their people well. Their first obligation was to protect their land and thereby their country from invasion. There were willing to put their lives on the line as Americans and proud Navajos. The concept of using the Navajo language as a secret code gave their mission a unique sense of purpose and value that all Americans should learn about and appreciate. There is no way to tell how many American lives were saved by the use of this unbreakable code.
The author's compelling research efforts received backing from countless code talkers, the officers and government leadership at the time. Many military and civilian historians supported the author's efforts to honor these men and to bring together the most detailed and complete account of their mission possible. I particularly enjoyed the many stories quoted from Navajo Code Talkers of their combat experiences. Along with the harrowing battle tales, there were snippets of humorous events that could only happen in such unique circumstances. Still, the great losses experienced during World War II left these men changed forever.
As a disabled American veteran of the Operation Iraqi Freedom war, I have a deep appreciation of the Navajo way of cleansing the spirit after returning from combat. The goal of the tribe is to completely restore the Navajo combat veteran to a normal way of life. The support these men received from the tribe is a wonderful example of how we should treat our veterans today. I'm very thankful for the author's efforts to document the history of such proud warriors as they represented our United States Marine Corps and the finest traditions of our great military. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about a great example of selfless service and sacrifice in a combat zone or about this unique mission that only the Navajo tribe could complete.

Great Theoretical Introduction

I was assigned this book for my Methods and Theories of Art History course, and I have to say that it was of great help at the time. What makes me recommend it so fervently is that it greatly complements with the reading of classic art historical texts, in the sense that it provides a much better theoretical background. If you're reading semiological art history, or you're trying to locate the work of Wolfflin or Panofsky within a chronological and ideological frame, I would suggest you read this as a helpful background tool.

There was a general consensus at the end of the course that D'Alleva's book should be an almost mandatory reading for art history majors, or even for those people whose interest is the history of art and artworks.

I do not like Tony!

*(warning-I'm mad at Tony!)* and some *spoilers*!!!

5 stars for writing- you get swept away and captivated the whole time your reading!!
5 stars for the series and characters-you will fall in love with these people!
3.5-4 stars for Trish, just Trish- because I'm mad and dont like Tony!

Tony was an A**HOLE!!! He treated Trish like crap!! Talked to her so horribly. Now I don't know about you, but I wouldn't have stayed for that s***!!! But SHE did!!!!! She basically let him continue to do it allllll the way to the end of the book!!! I know she felt guilty for hurting him over the fake cheating pictures from Lexi's story, but my god she had no back bone. None. Except of course when she tried to beat the hell outta Destiny :D Now, I did LOVE that scene!!! But there were soooo many times when I wanted her to pack up her stuff and leave already! Between his manwhoring, the Girlfriend BJ (lol) from the beginning, , him calling her a whore at the beginning of the story, I mean I could go on and on with the awful things he did and said to her. I felt so bad for her! When she asked him if he loved her and he said he "cared", she held herself with some pride and dignity I guess and said she understood! But I wanted to scream "LEAVE NOW YOU DUMMY! WHERE IS YOUR PRIDE!?" because the poor girl apologized and explained over and over!!!

I cried When Trish got kidnapped and Lex went to Tony's house and told him about what happened to Trish when she was 9 yrs old and that she had been a virgin until him. And I'm glad it gutted him. He deserved it!!! I'm glad he was so distraught over her that he threw up. It was hard for me to feel sorry for him. I disliked him that much and by the time he got his head outta his ass it was too late for me to like him. I can handle all the jealousy, the bossy alpha male stuff about him, but he broke her so many times I just couldn't forgive him. And for me, he didn't grovel or suffer enough for her to have forgiven him finally. I do love Trish's character, I felt for her and felt connected to her which is probably why I'm so pissed at Tony for her. The last 21-22 % of this book is so emotional. I got teary eyed through so much of the last part of it. Very well written.

I have to add that I was thrilled that Lexi and Lan were in the story. Loved that!

I LOVED Lexi, Baby!!!!!! I LOVE Lynda LeeAnne's writing!!!!! I LOVE ALL the characters from this series, except for Tony lol and I WILL read and can not wait to read Adam's book!

*********I re-read the last 20% of the book tonight, (I read this book in one setting earlier today) and after reading, I may not be as mad at Tony anymore. Because even tho he can still be a HUGE a**hole, I know he loves Trish. He just better treat her like the damn fine woman she is lol from now on. ;) and ok, maybe now that I'm not so mad, he did suffer a lot, and I'll admit he showed her a lot of remorse and love and I'm glad for HER lol she loved him and he did come through for her in the end. I hope I sound nicer now lol *************

HAVE SOME MERCY!!!!!

Yea, that is my happy dance because this book was FAN-TABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!

Lord have mercy the tension between Tony and Trish had me fanning myself. Have mercy those two had me going all kinds of crazy. My inner minion was telling me, yea you are a little crazy, but its okay because everyone is, right?

I am sure if you read this you are gonna be all kinds of crazy too. It's a emotional rollercoaster. I mean at one time I was hot, in need of a cold shower,then I was in need of some ice cream to heal my broken heart.

I mean I was beginning to love and HATE Tony at the same time, then he done things that made me really hate him and I wanted Trish to not be so pathetic and leave his sorry a**.

Trish was my hero, she was so brave and hard core but Tony could tear her down and I hated to see her so broken, without any fight left in her lil feisty body and after finding out what happened to her at the age of 9 , and the hurtful awful things that Tony spat from his vile mouth, well then I wanted to hug Trish and ball like a baby!

Yea so I was happy, I cried, I screamed, I did a happy dance, I wanted to climb through this iPad and kick Tony in the ball sack and watch him squirm!!

But there were times that good ol Trish brought out that fighting spirit that had me rooting her on, especially when she told BJ( hahaha) just how Tony liked it, I busting up. I laughed so hard I had happy tears.

And when Destiny showed up, the claws were out and Trish was about to rip her apart if Tony had not intervened and that had me, jumping up and down, rooting her own!

I can only say this book was AWESOME!!!!!!

Lynda LeAnne is pure genius.

Tony has no redeeming qualities

This is just my opinion and you may feel I'm totally off base which is perfectly okay. I absolutely could not stand either character. Trish was weak. Really, really weak. NEVER would I let a man talk to me and treat me the way she let Tony treat her. Tony was a total Neanderthal. I cannot stress enough how disgusting I found Tony. He was emotionally abusive and she just took it and told him she loved him. We didn't even get a back story on Tony that may have given us insight as to why he was borderline psychotic and possessive. Possibly even have made it all somewhat justifiable. Ugh...had to force myself to finish this one.

The supporting characters were decent. I would like to see more from Shane and Shannon but hope Tony and Trish disappear.

I'm giving this book 1.5 stars because I had enjoyed Lexi Baby and wouldn't mind seeing Shane and Shannon get their story told as mentioned above. I also feel obligated to mention this book was riddled with editing issues. That normally isn't something that bothers me to much but when your already not enjoying the book they seem to jump out at you more!
