About the Author

Scott W. Santoro is principal of Worksight, a New York graphic design studio. He holds graphic design degrees from Pratt Institute (BFA) and Cranbrook Academy of Art (MFA). He is also a graphic design professor at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and is an active speaker on graphic design issues. Scott has served as vice president of the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Design (AIGA) and as a national screening committee member for design as part of the Fulbright program.

As a student of Santoro's Graphic Design class I found Guide to Graphic Design a very useful tool. It is beneficial to see the layouts of the book as printed matter. The examples and work featured are well thought out and sometimes inspiring. The book is a good resource for anyone in the field.

Explaining the Value of Thoughtful Design by Example!

What a great book--I'm astounded at the amount of information assembled and the amount of work it must have taken to organize it and make it so accessible!

The book is written specifically for the novice student, and yet, as a working professional, I'm reminded of things I don't often think about anymore (at least not consciously). The tone is inviting, with layers that offer multiple opportunities to connect with the content. Scott Santoro makes the point, importantly and on many occasions, that design is a thinking and problem solving process as much (or more) than it is a visual or aesthetic one.

The design, as you would hope (but can't necessarily expect in a "textbook, " or any book for that matter) contributes immeasurably to the success and accessibility.

The short quotes that dot the book--from Yale's emeritus graduate design chair Alvin Eisenman to sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury--are a constant reminder of the benefit of being pithy. In some situation less may be more, in this masterfully organized book (300+ pages; 12 chapters) more is more. A new benchmark! I hope it is embraced by the educational community and becomes a universal text for the next few generations of designers.

informational and inspirational

Guide to Graphic Design has helped expand my knowledge of the core concepts that are the foundation of graphic design. Along with historical and modern references, it has defined some processes and techniques that were never before named. As a college student, I have found this textbook very easy to follow and comprehend. I found the "a la Carte" version to be the best for me because I can take individual chapters with me to class (making it easier to carry) instead of the whole textbook. I would recommend this book to any graphic designer/student looking to learn more about graphic design.

Same Book as Shoot to Thrill, With a Different Title

Play to Kill is the title that Shoot to Thrill was released under here in Australia in 2010. No doubt the book will later be released here under the Shoot to Thrill title as well. So don't buy both by mistake! This is actually not the first time this has happened with P J Tracy novels. The same thing happened with this mother daughter writing team's sensational first novel Monkeewrench which was also published under the title of Want to Play? I think Shoot to Thrill is a bit more catchier title than Play to Kill but compare the prices of both. Actually I'd recommend borrowing this novel first from your library to see if you still want to own it before forking over your hard earned money as it's not up to the same high standard of the previous novels.

Basic plot of Play to Kill again revolves around the characters from the previous books. Some of the previous novels can be read and enjoyed to their full extent as standalone reads but with this one I think I would have rated even less if I wasn't already familiar with the characters. This one like with the previous novel Snow Blind has the computer genius characters that make up the Monkeewrench team playing only a low word count role. I think it worked with Snow Blind, partly because that was a novelty for the series, but Minnesotan detectives Rolseth and Magozzi really just aren't as interesting as the Monkeewrench characters, which is what made the first three novels of the series such stand out reads. This book is also no where near as interesting as the plot of Snow Blind.

Play to Kill's storyline revolves around a number of snuff films appearing online. Most viewers assume they are fake, but since the police across various parts of America have the actual bodies from those murders, it seems there's a new serial killer in town. Naturally detectives Rolseth and Magozzi are become part of this investigation when the body of a man in a bridal dress they are investigating matches the footage of him being murdered online. Being that these are nation wide killings we've also got the introduction of a new character in FBI agent John Smith who is trying to convince the best illegal hackers, including the Monkeewrench team to help with the investigation.

Disappointment

Thanks to 1st reviewer about PLAY TO KILL a reprint of SHOOT TO THRILL. I was going to order this book new book when I read the prologue. Knowing I had read this under different title, I did further research. I am mad about this! Since I am one of the founders & reviewer of RENDEZVOUS Mag. for over 23 years, I've seen this happen before but this isn't the 1st time that it's been done with this author & publisher. Knowing this usually isn't the author's fault, I would suggest that this should not be done again. As for me, I will never order or buy another book without doing my homework. Monkeewrench is one of my favorite book and author and even now, I just talked a library to order the entire series. I'm waiting anxiously for a NEW MONKEEWRENCH book.

Not as good as the earlier works

I would agree with an earlier reviewer - Gino and Magozzi just aren't as interesting as the Monkeewrench crew, and this is more a book about the MPD solving crimes with Monkeewrench coming in as secondary characters. Actually I felt as though the Monkeewrench people (other than Grace) make token appearances with token dialogue, which is disappointing given their involvement in some of the other books in the series. Of those that have more dialogue - Grace sighs a lot, Gino rants a lot, Magozzi spends a lot of time with a tight feeling in his guts (and to be honest, his non-relationship with Grace is getting a bit annoying and he is starting to sounds a bit whiney and irritating). The plot is alright and there is an interesting twist at the end, but I'm not sure if that is enough to carry this book. It does raise some interesting points about the Web and the changing nature of profiling killers (if this is true or not I'm not sure but it made sense to me!!). In short - it is alright, but definitely not the book to pick up first if you are new to the series. I will keep it on my kindle because I am very fond of the Monkeewrench characters, but if I hadn't read anything else of the author's, I think I would have deleted it.

Java Modeling in Color with UML--printed in color--provides four UML "archetypes" for common entities in business modeling. These have rather abstract names like the moment-interval. Each archetype is assigned a different color in UML. The book uses these four archetypes to model 61 domain-specific business components for manufacturing (including suppliers and inventory control), facilities management, sales, employees, and organizations, plus accounting and document management.

Similar in spirit to software-design patterns, these UML components are catalogued with short prose descriptions and illustrated with UML. The detail here is often impressive, though the type is necessarily small. (Fortunately, the CD-ROM contains all these diagrams--including Java source code--for use within your own designs.) The authors--all experts in UML--have done the heavy lifting here. The idea is to incorporate these components within your own projects.

Besides a catalog of expert components, this book describes the authors' Feature-Driven Development (FDD) software-design process. (While there is one UML standard, design processes still proliferate.) FDD touts good productivity with a minimum of overhead. The authors argue that it can be used productively within today's ever-shorter business cycles.

Archetypes, color, and components will forever change how you build Java models. We build Java models with teams of developers. In our day-to-day mentoring, we develop and try out new ideas and innovations that will help those developers excel at modeling. Some of those ideas fall by the wayside. Some provide modest help. Others, according to our clients, are home runs. In this book, we reveal some of our home runs.

Chapter 1 explores the importance of color and introduces the color-coding that project teams have been applying with success around the globe. It also introduces the domain-neutral component, a template that youÕll see applied again and again in the chapters that follow.

Chapters 2Ð5 deliver ready-to-use Java models. These chapters present 61 domain-specific components, each one an interesting teaching by example. Use the components as they are, extend them with plug-ins, extend them by adding your own content, or use them as an outside opinion (comparing and contrasting with your own ongoing work).

Chapter 6 delivers a process that integrates Java modeling into the delivery of frequent, tangible, working results.

Don't Be Fooled

The people who trashed this book didn't do much with it, that's clear. When you first go to the book (or if you've seen Coad speak, as I did @ JavaOne), you will think that Mr. Rogers is trying to talk you into teaching you a new way to program w/crayons. I was also struck by the proliferation of classes that Coad advocates. However, I have returned to this book a number of times, in part because Coad's tool Together/J is now the preeminent Java/UML tool, it makes Rational look like a set of tinker toys. This last time, I've become quite enamored with what is going on in here. Here are my suggestions: 1. Really try and understand the DNC (domain neutral component). It is a very good approach to a kind of design completeness theorem that I haven't seen much talk about elsewhere. 2. Look at the diagrams. I look at them over and over again. After going a couple of rounds I found that I was becoming addicted to the visualization process, not merely as a representational apparatus, but as a way of actually doing more work/understanding the work I'd already done.
If you get the 30 day eval of Together/J and you work through understanding the DNC and color, you'll pass into another dimension from which you will not readily want to return. Plain white UML is dimensionless to me now.
All that said, I gave the book a 4 because it really needs an update. The FDD (feature driven development) methodology is not really interesting or appropriate anymore, I think. In the new massively interconnected, distributed component world, features are not what its about anymore, unless you're developing a word processor. Also, the archetypes are based on a non-EJB approach that will change if distributed computing is applied to it, quite significantly. Still this is an important book and combined w/TogetherSoft's tool it's perhaps the best design/UML teaching combo available. There aren't enough books out there that have models for real things in them. This does that and a lot more.

Not a book on Java and UML!

If you are looking for a book on Java and UML or a book that is about UML and uses Java examples; This IS NOT THE right book. The authors give you their way of patterns or archetypes that they call it. If you already know UML and what to see if there is other techniques or ways of extending UML this is the right book for you. Another thins about the colors, The idea is new but not a very good one. The book presents an approach to generalizing business components (modelliing patterns - referred to as archetypes) that really helps one to understand the structure and interaction of business components. I use this book as a regular reference. It includes a near-complete business component model through 12 compound components.

About the Author

Dr. Jeffrey O. Hollinger graduated from Hofstra University in 1969 and received a dental degree and PhD from the University of Maryland in 1973 and 1981, respectively. In addition, he completed a dental residency program and craniofacial fellowship in the U.S. Army Dental Corps. Since 2000, Dr. Hollinger has been a tenured professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the departments of biomedical engineering and biological sciences. He is the director of the Bone Tissue Engineering Center at CMU.

From 1993 to 2000, he was a tenured professor at the Oregon Health Sciences University in the departments of surgery and developmental biology, and he directed the Northwest Wound Healing Center. In 1993 Dr. Hollinger retired from the U.S. Army as a colonel after serving 20 years of active duty. During that period, he was the director of the Army’s Bone Program, as well as the director of the Department of Physiology and Biochemistry at the U.S. Army Institute of Dental Research at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. He has over 35 years of experience in bone regeneration using biological factors, biomaterials, and preclinical animal models.

Dr. Hollinger has received numerous federal grants as the principal investigator (NIH, NSF, DoD, and NIST) focusing on applied and fundamental sciences for bone regeneration and is engaged with several industrial groups emphasizing bone regenerative therapeutics, as well as serving on corporate boards. Dr. Hollinger has several patents and has licensed technology developed in his lab. He received the prestigious Clemson Award in biomaterials in 2008. He has over 250 peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, book chapters, and books.

Robert Snowden is a Professor in the School of Psychology, Cardiff University, where his research spans visual perception, attention, and abnormal psychology.

Peter Thompson is Senior Lecturer in Visual Psychophysics in the Department of Psychology, University of York, where his research examines the perception of motion and speed.

Tom Troscianko is Professor of Psychology in the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Bristol, where his research explores perception, cognition, and action.

Basic Vision Text

This is an excellent text for an overview of vision research. I teach a course in Visual Performance which includes basic vision and its applications. I intend to use this book along with Boyce's book on Human Factors in Lighting. Basic Vision is good for courses which have advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It and Boyce's text also come in paperback versions.

Fabulous tutorial on modern physiology of vision

Author hits essentials of modern physiology of vision with easily understood descriptions and many illustrations and diagrams. I found it useful in teaching an overview of vision to a science club.

Basic Vision book review

I am a senior in College and am takng a psych course and it required this book. Once reading it I truely started to enjoy it. I actually can't wait to read it and have to wait to read the whole book to stay along with the chapters. Because I am taking courses like Advanced Nutrition Biochemitry and Medical Nutrition Therapy in which the books are several thousand pages long and very confusing sometimes the Basic Vision book is a comedic relief but still helps learn the material needed for the class.
