Marxism for young people!

This is a small book with great graphics. It can be read to or by a child that reads. It explains what capitalism is and how it exploits working people. Of course the explanation is taken from Marx's economic theories. It could actually educate an adult as well as a young person. This is the only book I've encountered that was written to explained basic marxism to a child.

About the Author
James Stock chairs the Department of Economics at Harvard University. His research focuses on empirical macroeconomics, forecasting, and econometric methods.  Among other things, he has served on the economics panel at the National Science Foundation, on the Academic Advisory Group of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and as a consultant to the European Central Bank. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Yale and holds advanced degrees in statistics and economics from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mark Watson is the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the Econometric Society. His research focuses on time-series econometrics, empirical macroeconomics, and macroeconomic forecasting. He has served as a consultant for the Federal Reserve Banks of Chicago and Richmond. Before coming to Princeton, Watson served on the economics faculty at Harvard and Northwestern. Watson did his undergraduate work at Pierce Junior College and California State University at Northridge, completed his Ph.D. at the University of California at San Diego, and holds on honorary doctorate from the University of Bern.

Depends on who you're teaching.

This text is unusually brief when compared to most econometrics texts, and the brevity reflects the coverage of topics. Nevertheless, the authors have done a favor for those of us who have to teach regression to students without strong backgrounds in statistics, and whose interests do not take them into comparatively esoteric material.

As it is, the book does a good job of covering basic issues essential to using OLS regression for applied work in most institutional settings. The book is written so that students find it more accessible than other texts, though most still find it pretty heavy going. The book is replete with graphs and charts, clarifying important issues. Examples are numerous and instructive, as are questions for students to answer and problems for them to solve.

More and more academic majors are requiring their students to gain a working knowledge of regression analysis. Stock and Watson's book makes that task less onerous, and it recognizes that most students will not have to go beyond the core topics needed to work with useful but relatively simple models. A good book.

Would not recommend

The authors have adopted a very awkward approach: They exclude much statistical theory and any math beyond basic algebra, but they still try to incorporate a little bit of rigor and some formal (or quasi-formal) definitions here and there. The result is just confusing. Their unsuccessful attempt at balancing between intuition and rigor is not helped by the writing itself, which is clumsy, or the generally uninteresting examples provided. (Note: Some additional explanations and derivations are included in various appendices, but they are hard to find and generally not very detailed.) IMHO, Wooldridge's "Introductory Econometrics" does a much better job conveying the underlying concepts at a comparable level, has better examples, and is much more pleasant to read.

Great for an introductory class with less complex math skills

I am using this book as a self study guide to run regression on personal projects. I find that what it lacks in math rigor as compared to Wooldridge's Introductory Econometrics, it far than make up for in data interpretation. It is a mistake to use this book for students who have advanced math skills such as probability theory and multivariate calculus. But for business or just applications it is superior.

Indeed it is said that my writings are poison to some, manna to others. Because in deeply ingrained, controversial issues, there is never one solid set of truth. When an outsider takes the role of an independent observer then writes claiming that their viewpoint is "unbiased" and "objective," both of the feuding parties will disagree with her.
I was raised in Turkey, and have witnessed that in general Turks are open-minded,and free of cradle to grave hatred towards those who betrayed them in the past. My novels are complex and off-the-beaten track, ranging from reincarnation to politically controversial issues. But I did not, consciously, concoct novels to fit a certain view. Rather, these themes showed up as an inherent part of my fictional characters' lives. For example, one of my three protagonists in THE HORSEMAN, is a Kurd, Mehmet Ali Mesut, Professor of Sociology, who is an idealist, an enlightened man, his chief concern the betterment of his people! by bridging the gap between the rich and the poor, yet he comes from a line of aghas, feudal lords. So naturally feudalism in Turkey, its history and effect on the emotional and social sovereignty of the people, enters the story line.

Kristina has an eye opener with "The Horseman"

"A gripping epic of passion, politics, spirituality and more." That is what the back cover promises. And this is precisely what this magnificent book delivered. From its mysterious beginning, it traces the journey of a young girl leaping toward womanhood, at a dizzy pace that is at times in it self, breath-taking. Set in Turkey in the turbulent 60's, I was immediately immersed in a kaleidoscope of rich culture and intrigue, that slowly started to burn inside me as if I were there as witness, until at last I was nearly consumed. The rich pageantry and insight of a little understood culture comes to life between the pages of The Horseman, taking you on a break-neck journey of romance, passion and self discovery, as well as the realization of past life experience. Fragile alliances, mysterious dreams of the past, action and adventure intertwine into an excellent tale both realistic in its scope, but powerful in impact. As the story travels full circle to the twist in the end, the hint of a greater twist to come inspired me to grab the next book of the series, "The Scorpion Child," And ride off into the sunset......

'The Horseman' is a gripping novel that will sweep you in to its characters' lives before you realize you've been caught. Highly descriptive in its imagery, the tale guides the reader through worlds both ancient and contemporary with compelling characters, intriguing story line, and cultural/political clashes too richly detailed to resist. Magnificently illuminative of the ongoing conflicts between Turks and Kurds, 'The Horseman' is as much a pleasurable geographical/historical journey through ancient lands as it is a tale of the strengths and weaknesses within the human condition. Romance, political intrigues, cultural bridges, betrayals, faith ... it is timely and very much alive. O'Donnelly reveals a great depth of knowledge on many levels including the traditions & mores within the Muslim world, the Irish Catholic experience, and even Celtic mythology. Highly recommended to any reader who craves a good tale enriched by trans-continental adventures, historical insights and skillfully applied literary gifts of the author.

Sexy and exciting romantic thriller--and launch to powerful series

Ariadne, a blond American teen living with her parents in Turkey, suffers a prophetic vision while on her way to an archeological dig. Sometimes the vision is of an ancient past, and sometimes of a cruel future. In every case, though, she is caught in a love triangle.

When she's rescued from a kidnapping by a handsome Kurdish nobleman, Ariadne believes she may have found her great love--and certainly Mehmet Ali falls for the beautiful and energetic teenager. Although she does love Mehmet Ali, though, Ariadne is obsessed with the crusading journalist Burhan Kayhanoly--who falls for her the moments she walks into his office to interview for an internship at the newspaper where he writes a regular column.

Burhan exposes Ariadne to the poverty and ignorance that, he believes, are holding his beloved nation down. Ariadne is especially sympathetic with the poor conditions for women--a sympathy made much stronger when Mehmet Ali's sister weds a much older man--and then commits suicide. She dreams of a life with Burhan, together stomping out the corruption that is such a blight on Turkish society and politics.

Award-winning author Kristina O'Donnelly mixes past-life regression, tarot, and traditional Turkish magic with sensual passion and with adventure as Mehmet Ali, Ariadne, and Burhan sometimes cooperate and sometimes battle over the path to be taken by their nation (or even whether there should be a nation of Turkey rather than an independent Kurdistan). O'Donnelly blends in the past-lives over which these three have carried out their eternal triangle of love and dispair.

Good Reference Tome - Trades Depth for Breadth

Windows Power Tools is a collection of brief tutorials and overviews of freeware and open source [...] development tools. What kind of rating you might give this book depends largely upon what type of background that you're coming from. If you're the kind who has stuck religiously to the Microsoft Press series of books and acknowledge only the old testament, than this book will be either an epiphany (5 stars) or outright blasphemy (1 star). If continuous integration, test-driven development, and object relational mapping (new testament type stuff) are terms that you are fairly conversant with, then this book will probably land somewhere in the 2-4 star range.

Since I put myself in the 2-4 star group, I'll start by mentioning that there are great online tomes of knowledge that contain most of the tools listed in this book and a bunch others not listed here. One of the most respected and well linked lists belongs to the author of this book's forward, Scott Hanselman. His "Ultimate Developer and Power Users Tool List for Windows" has been dutifully updated on an annual basis. Despite the fact that there are free, decent resources out there that fill some of the same purposes as this book, I enjoyed thumbing through the book and picking out tools I hadn't heard of to fill in some knowledge gaps.

The main reason that I landed on a 3 star rating instead of a 4 star rating is that the brief tutorial format that worked so well for James when describing Visual Studio functionality is his previous book, "Visual Studio Hacks", just doesn't do justice to tools that represent significant pieces of an application or support infrastructure. I would have preferred to see less tools and deeper coverage in certain areas. Understandably, since not everyone would want to see the same tools as me; a broader, shallower approach trades off depth and detail for marketability.

I've included my complete list of pros and cons below so that you can see how I came to my rating:

Pros
- Great reference book with enough of an introduction to get you started with a broad array of tools
- If you're an O'Reilly Safari subscriber, this book is included in your subscription
- The authors aspire to keep materials current on the book's companion Web site. At the time of this review, the site is little more than a list of tools in the book

Cons
- Lots of this material is available for free on the Web, if you have the time and inclination to find it
- Introductions to tools are not sufficiently in depth to communicate any more than the most rudimentary of use cases

Excellent Productivity Booster

Until reading this book, I did not realize how much productivity I stood to gain.

When I first agreed to review this book I didn't know what I was really getting into. I expected a brief catalog of fairly standard, well-known tools which would only come as a surprise to fresh graduate. I expected I getting a small pocket-sized book which I could devour in one train ride. I could not have been more wrong.

The book covers over 170 Open Source tools across a wide variety of development domains from Windows Forms and Web Development, to working with Databases and XML data. Each tool will in some way enhance your productivity in some way, allowing you to do the things your really enjoy about writing software on the Microsoft Windows platform. The productivity gains vary from being able to generate the tedious 80% of your project to those 5 second boosts which all add up and prevent RSI.

Each of the 23 chapters is targeted at a particular issue or development task and opens with one or two pages describing this task. These are so well written that I think the opening of Chapter 9 [Analyzing Your Code], which gives a quick explanation of code metrics, is my favorite section of the whole book. This means that the book is not just an encyclopedic reference of tools, but also of modern development techniques.

After the introduction a very brief description of each tool follows. These are great memory refreshers once you have read the book and are repeated on the companion web-site. Each tool is then given its own section and the chapter closes with a bibliography for people interested in finding out more.

This structure of "Introduction, Overview data, Full text, Where to get more information" is repeated for each tool. The overview data includes such information as:

The version covered
The home page
The license type
Which versions of the .NET Framework are supported
A collection of related tools for cross-referencing purposes

The full text of each tool explains where to get the tool, how to install it and how to get started using it allowing you to jump straight in and leverage the tool. This section is often littered with useful screenshots which give you a glimpse at the experience you will find when using the tool. The text for each tool closes with instructions for getting support on the tool and often a brief passage from the tools creator explaining the thinking behind creating the tool.

If that weren't enough, the book also has a companion website at [...] where all of the tools are listed and tagged, each with a download link enabling you to download one straight from the site. You can even create your own "toolbox" and add tools from the site to it, allowing you to quickly and easily provision new machines from the web site itself.

All in all I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I would have liked to have seen more information about the selection process for the tools and readers would do well to remember that a tools inclusion (or lack of inclusion) in the text is not necessarily an indicator of its maturity or usefulness. Be sure that you have a lot of time if you buy this book as you are likely to download, install, and play with many of the tools. If you do then using a virtual machine is highly recommended. None of the tools did anything harmful to my computer, but having 170 tools running at once just isn't advised!

Open-source and free developer/performance tools can be found in abundance on the internet today but one of the few issues that generally comes up after you've gotten hold of one is "how does this work?".

On occasion you'll start to use a tool or add-in only to find out later on that there's a much better way to utilise the power you suddenly have at your hands - but by then, you've spent hours already "mis-using" the tool.

This book arms you with information, tips and tricks, how-tos and descriptions on a host of known, and possibly unknown, tools that will seriously help you speed up your development - so why not be the hero of the office and start developing smartly!

Over the last couple of years i've been in and out of windows and web development and felt that i was comfortable in both arenas. But after reading this book I knew that I could have been a much more efficient developer if only I'd known about the tools it explores.

The book is divided into suitable chapters, making it very easy to use the book for fast reference if you suddenly remember that you once read (somewhere?) about a tool doing exactly what you're trying to achieve in the old fashioned way - doing it yourself from scratch.

Each chapter (or tool/tip/add-in) is presented in an easily to understand english, with a logical order that makes reading this book a pleasure. Some books comes across with technical jargon without explanations for the varied levels of developers out there, but this book can easily be enjoyed by both the experienced developer and the starting rising star.

Some of my most favorite tools are included in this book, such as Anthem.Net, which encapsulates web forms and extends AJAX capability without having to write a single line of JavaScript.

Other tools which was new to me, included CopySourceAsHTML, and the experience with which i've had with posting code over the years, or including snippets in documentation, has just been greatly improved.

Conclusion

What i found most pleasing about this book, is the consistency in which it presents each topic for you. The authors has gone to great length to make it a flawless experience in reading this book and even though many has contributed to the content, the layout is flawlessly simple.

A very easy read and a bookshelf essential! Five stars...

Introduction The ideas in this book—written for beginners, professional drummers, and everyone in between—come from my 30 plus years of studying, playing, and teaching drums. As a student, I did not find one book that covered all of the information I needed to become a proficient drummer; as a veteran teacher of approximately 40 students a week for over 20 years, I wanted to share the methods I have refined in my successful teaching practice. If you are a beginner, this book will help you get started with grip and reading. I present practical applications to show why you are practicing these basic skills and give you advice on how to practice. If you are a professional, the challenging exercises included in here will keep your skills tuned up. I encourage you to build upon the ideas in this book to inspire your playing. Part 1 focuses on grip, technique, and basic reading of rhythms. Part 2 focuses on reading rhythms at all levels proficiently. Part 3 focuses on the 40 standard snare drum rudiments, sticking, and technique exercises. Part 4 focuses on drum set techniques, coordination, grooves, and soloing in different genres of music. Although this book progresses in a logical sequence, I recommend skipping around to work on specific skills. If you can complete this book correctly, you will have a solid foundation and play better at every level. I have also incorporated some of the ideas from great drum books that I’ve used throughout my years in drumming, which I have named and recommended at the end of this book. About the Author Scott loves teaching drums! Since graduating from Berklee College of Music, Scott has brought hundreds of drummers through elementary school and into the high school band with a foundation of great technique and musical knowledge. He has taught an average of 40 students a week for over 20 years, and participated in hundreds of recordings, live music projects and master classes. Scott also specializes in working with adult drummers who are new to the instrument, or who want to tune up their existing skills. Scott's depth of experience as a teacher and performer puts him in a unique class. Scott has a proven track record of preparing students for auditions at all levels and has helped students earn scholarships to music schools and universities. Many students have gone on to become professional drummers, drum teachers, band directors, and members of DCI drum corps. Scott is proud to be on the Vic Firth education team. This book is fantastic!!

This book is fantastic! Everything you need for all levels of player. Not only do you get music theory, sticking, rudiments and many other topics, but there is so much more. I personally loved the drum set coordination sections. The linear grooves are also really cool and well explained. Scott also prepares students for auditions by giving many examples of many styles that a player would have to know to have a successful audition. I was so inspired by some of his jazz time examples in 3/4 time that I composed my own tune based on the groove. If you put the time in you WILL become a much better drummer. This is a must have book!!
