About the Author

Lech Madeyski is Assistant Professor in the Software Engineering Department, Institute of Informatics, Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland. His current research interests include: experimentation in software engineering, software metrics and models, software quality and testing, software products and process improvement, and agile software development methodologies (e.g., eXtreme Programming).

He has published research papers in refereed software engineering journals (e.g., IET Software, Journal of Software Process: Improvement and Practice) and conferences (e.g., PROFES, XP, EuroSPI, CEE-SET). He has been a member of the program, steering, or organization committee for several software engineering conferences such as PROFES (International Conference on Product Focused Software Process Improvement), ENASE (International Working Conference on Evaluation of Novel Approaches to Software Engineering), CEE-SET (Central and East-European Conference on Software Engineering Techniques), and BPSC (International Working Conference on Business Process and Services Computing).

His paper at PROFES 2007 received the Best Paper Award.

A great example of empiral evaluations of a SW development technique

It has probably taken me a year on and off reading to get through "Test-Driven Development: An Empirical Evaluation of Agile Practice" and not because it was boring but because it was hard. Why hard? Well, the amount of statistics in this book sort-of blew me away and is definitively above my usual amount (which isn't very high). It was insightful for me how thoroughly you can (and should!?) analyze SW development techniques and it does make me wonder about a lot of claims by people who use less... rigor in their analysis.

Let me start off with what this book is not. This book is *not* a book about learning test-driven development and neither will it tell you about test-driven development techniques. Reading this book will probably not make you any better (or worst) at test-driven development at all... as from this books perspective test-driven development is just one technique that can be analyzed and empirically evaluated.

The book contains 10 chapters. Of these the first three are introduction chapters to test-driven development, empirical software engineering, related studies and setting the goals of the research. Chapter 4 introduces the three 'experiments' in test-driven development for which the researchers collected data which they could analyze. The experiments are mainly with students and contain both a single-programmer and pair-programming variant. A lot of the data is collected using several Eclipse plugins.

Chapter 5-8 analyses a specific measurement for each of these different experiments: 5) the effect on amount of acceptance tests passed, 6) the effect of number of acceptance test passed per hour, 7) the effect on internal software quality and 8) the effect on unit tests (which I felt was a bit odd...). Chapter 9 is a meta-analysis which tries to combine the three experiments and make a larger conclusion. Chapter 10 is the final conclusion.

I probably couldn't understand half of the books mathematics, yet I felt the book was quite insightful in the thoroughness and explanation of its analysis. My biggest amusement was when the author mentions (quite often) that the individual skill difference had a larger effect than any of the other variables. That, of course, was not the goal of the research, but it does stress the first value of the agile manifesto that a technique like TDD (no matter how good) will only be as good as the person doing it... and that is not empirically proven. Other conclusions of the book was that TDD didn't have much significant impact of any of the variables that were measured... except for internal design quality. This is amusing to me as many experienced TDD-ers will keep stressing that TDD is a SW design technique... and this is what the research seems to support.

All in all, I was impressed with the book. From the perspective of an empirical evaluation, I'd probably give it 5 stars. Unfortunately, the main title of the book is "test-driven development" and from the perspective of learning test-driven development, it would get only 1 star. I did all my own mathematical Amazon reviewer magic on 5 and 1 and ended up with a 4 star review, but let me be clear: If you want to learn TDD or improve your TDD techniques... do not buy this book! If you want to learn how to empirically evaluate a SW design technique, this book is one of the best I've read. If you are an experienced TDD-er and are curious about these experiments and TDD research... this book is worth reading too. A though read due to its thoroughness.

All the book is a constant use of acronyms. So you have to learn them by heart, or to refer to them constantly. This makes sentences almost impossible to read easily. And more problematic, the text always sends you to some others books. The best for you is to check the selected bibliography and read the selected books directly.

Craig A. Everett, PhD, is Director of the Arizona Institute of Family Therapy and is in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. He is a past president of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and is the Editor of The Journal of Divorce and Remarriage. He is the author or editor of 14 books.

Sandra Volgy Everett, PhD, is Director of Clinical Education at the Arizona Institute of Family Therapy and is in private practice in Tucson, Arizona. The author or editor of 3 books, two of which were cowritten with Craig A. Everett, she also has published numerous journal articles on clinical work with children in family therapy and on divorce.

Highly recommended; a great resource for family therapists!

An excellent resource! I'm a therapist working with children, couples, and families where ADHD is sometimes an issue at various levels. This book covers all of the bases, noting issues in the parent-child subsystem, the marital subsystem, the sibling subsystem, and the whole system in general. Good, practical wisdom!

This is a great read for understanding how ADHD plays into family dynamics and understanding the impact on each member. I recommend this book for anyone with ADHD in their family, counselors, therapists, and social workers or those who work with families struggling with ADHD.

About the Author
Edward Leedskalnin (1887-1951, Miami) was an eccentric Latvian emigrant to the United States and amateur sculptor who, it is alleged, single-handedly built the monument known as Coral Castle in Florida. He was also known for his unusual theories on magnetism.

Rating depends on reason for reading

I saw a blurb on some scifi show regarding Edward Leedskalnin and his Coral Castle, which prompted me to do more research on the Internet. I was fascinated and curious and I thought I knew what I was getting into when I purchased this book along with "How to Read His Writings" by Marlinski. My complaint is about the reprint and editing of "Magnetic Currents" and not about the content or Ed's writing technique. If you want to try to decode Ed's notebooks, DO NOT BUY THIS VERSION (Reprint by Health Research). They fixed spelling, grammar and did not use the original type fonts - all of which are believed to be clues about his work. They did not use any of the pictures from his original pamphlets, so that part of the puzzle is also missing. I gave it only one star because I could not use it for the reason I purchased it. If you buy this book to learn more about magnetic currents, I'm not sure you'll be too happy, either. Ed is kind of hard to follow, which makes me think there is more to his writing than his words. The Coral Castle website has a Gift Shop where they sell his writings, but I don't know if the booklets are copies of the originals or if they are also selling a "fixed" version.

Difficult to read, but still very interesting

Mr. Leedskalnin's book is difficult to read, but one must consider that English was not his native tongue. According to those who knew him, he was very friendly and extremely intelligent, but also entirely secretive about certain things. For example, he claimed to know how the pyramids were built, and he also stated that he knew the secrets of anti-gravity. Of the latter, at least, he proved it by creating Coral Castle near Homestead, Florida -- in the process he managed to lift numerous up-to-30-ton blocks of coral WITHOUT MODERN MACHINERY. (Now that is a wonder.) Perhaps my fascination with this man colors my opinion of him, but I can overlook his misspelled words, et cetera, when I consider his intelligence. (In my own personal life, I happen to have a younger brother who is dyslexic and blind in one eye -- he can barely spell/write -- but he's also one of the most brilliant people I've ever known.) In any case, anyone thinking of reading or purchasing this book needs to prepare for its difficult style of wording. There will be a great deal of reading and re-reading, plus deciphering to be done.

This book doesn't contain ANY of the diagrams Ed created to go with the text. It's impossible to understand without them.

I found a copy of them online, and it helped a LOT.

I Need MORE!!!

I have to believe that it takes some serious talent and skill to create not only ONE book that leaves the reader begging for more, but this author managed to do so with an entire series effortlessly! I purchased the series based on a friend's recommendation to not bother buying each book separately because I would want them all anyway, so I did. Apparently my friend is not only good-looking but she's a genius too! These books are addictive! I thought "Come Undone" was quickly engaging - you definitely begin to see they dynamics of Olivia's marriage (and the strains within) right from the start. Of course, once David is introduced, it only gets better and you find yourself panting and sweating and reading with your mouth hanging open - but maybe that was just me, and I'd happily do it all over again! "Come Alive" was nothing but heart-wrenching and yes, even a little frustrating because Olivia has such a tendency to overthink, self-blame and feel "the worst" in everything, which I guess is not unnecessarily uncommon, as I would do it too - I guess that's another reason why each of these books draw you in and make you feel every emotion she is going through, it's very realistic, and in terms of her own emotional struggles, they stem from her childhood and you really see how often, our own choices are so defined by our upbringing (whether we may like to admit it or not!). I should also say the author incorporated the supporting storylines beautifully! everything blends in smoothly and you get to know the other characters and even hope for certain outcomes throughout the books. Finally, in "Come Together" there is of course, much of the excitement and heart-warming wrapping up of "loose ends", which leave you wanting more - of everything. I know that while there is much to dislike about the overall topic of infidelity and divorce, there is something to be said about knowing that even when you've made a terrible decision, you can forgive yourself enough to deem yourself worthy of happiness, even though others may not agree. Also, one can argue that most affairs occur because one person feels there is a "special" draw to another person outside of your marriage, so in some way that would invalidate that in this story, Olivia and David ARE meant to be together, but as this story is written, I think there is so much anxiety and true heart that you just can't help rooting for them because the chemistry is so palpable throughout. This series is beautifully written, with just the right amount of everything from humor to anguish to the red-hot, enviable sexual chemistry. I highly recommend this series, while warning the reader that you should not expect to sleep due to an unavoidable reading marathon that will occur once you start reading, and you will not mind at all!

Emotional.. Raw.... and Sexy... AMAZING book....

This actually a 4 1/2 star book for me, but Amazon does not allow halves... I was a little hesitant as I am not one for the whole adultery story line, but I absolutely fell in love with Olivia and David. Olivia thinks she has everything she needs and wants: an up and coming career, a good husband who loves her and friends and family she adores. However, when she meets David just one look on my random night was all it took for her to start realizing just maybe she was meant for more, to have more. David and Olivia's journey was emotional, raw, erotic and felt real. Without giving too much away, I was a little disappointed in the path Olivia's husband, Bill, takes and the direction his character went. I personally thought Olivia could have found her happiness without making Bill turn into an even bigger ass. However, I really enjoyed this series and have a serious book hangover... So much so i am stuck on what to try to read next, because I cannot stop thinking about these books.

Seriously - Best Series of 2013!!!

Do yourself a favor and buy this set. I've read hundred (maybe thousands) of romance novels and I have never been as hooked as I am with this. I MADE people I work with read this just so I could have people to talk about it with. They got just as hooked as I was. We're going to have to make a David Dylan support group just to function.

This isn't a book. It's not a series either. This is an obsession. It's an addiction. I got book 1 - come undone - as an ARC copy through Netgalley. I planned to write an honest review for it, but felt sure it would be negative. I read the description and though for sure that this was not MY kind of book. I read the first few pages and thought that I wasn't sure I even liked Olivia - the main character. By the time I got to chapter 3, though, I was hooked. It wasn't my story, but it hit home. I could connect with the characters, the feelings, the concept. I finished book 1 at 1am and HAD to get book 2 and start reading straight away even though I had to get up for work the next morning. Once I finished book 2, I stayed up all night long to finish book 3. THEN I restarted. I have read this entire trilogy twice in a week and I really want to read it again! Seriously, this is an obsession! I don't think it's possible to fall in love with a fictional book character, but who knows lol. David Dylan - ahhhhhhhh. Definitely wins the award for best male lead!!

There's nothing else I can say. This is a MUST read for anyone that even remotely likes romance novels. If I never read another book, but still had these, I would be ok.

What does it mean to be a marginalized person as an immigrant?

There have not been much materials of "Theological reflection" about being Korean-Americans. I assume that it is because of the short immigrant history in the North America. Therefore, the famous Korean American theologians I remember are handful: Sanghyun Lee is a professor at Princeton, Jung Young Lee was a professor at Drew University and passed away, and Andrew Sung Park is a professor at United Theological Seminary. Among them, Jung Young Lee's book which contains theological reflections about his marginalized life in the United States is very insightful and helpful for me who is on the same boat.

Through his book, Marginality, Lee is seeking the answer to the question, "What is the meaning of life as an ethnic minority in America?" Therefore, this book is his faithful and theological reflection regarding the issue of `living' in the North America as a marginalized person. As another Korean Christian immigrant, I really enjoyed reading this book from chapter by chapter because it is like my own story and all of his issues are what I have been struggling with as a Christian leader. Through this book, most of all, I realized that I'm not alone in this struggle with existential and theological questionings. I also expanded my narrow perspective of Korean-Canadian to Asian-American/Canadian, and I affirmed that my own theologizing has been on right track: finding out creativity of marginal situation, interpreting our situation as liminality with communitas, and considering identity discovery as the first step of creative transformation.

In his book, Lee takes `authobiographical method' for his theological method, saying, "Theology is certainly autobiographical, because I alone can tell my faith story ... if theology is contextual, it must certainly be at root autobiographical" (Lee 1995:7). Therefore, he uses freely several forms from his life for his doing theology such as parable, narrative, and poetry.

He starts his theologizing from his context, the margin of the North America. He introduces and soon refuses the classical definition of marginality that emphasizes only the negative side of marginality such as alienation, rejection, and struggles, and so forth. According to him, this is a product of centrality, which has to be overcome ultimately. The central groups view this marginality as "In-between" paradigm. However, it has to be overcome by the new definition of marginality, which is brought from his new marginal perspective. The new one is related to `both/and' and `In-beyond' approach, but it is totally new and creative because it is very `holistic.' He explains, "Just as `in-between' and `in-both' are one `in-beyond,' the margin and creative core are inseparable in new marginality" (61). Therefore, the norm of new marginality is the harmony of difference, and through this paradigm, he can be both an American and well as an Asian. "The new marginal person can be a reconciler and a wounded healer to the two-category system" (63). Through it, he refuses the paradigm of `either or' and `neither nor.' Instead, he combines both in a creative way, introducing his oriental philosophy, `ying/yang' paradigm. What he believes is that only through this new perspective, the marginal people can overcome the old paradigm, which has concentrated on only `centrality.'

He does not stop there. Instead, he goes further to reinterpret the main themes of traditional (the Western dominant) theology such as God, Jesus, Creation, the Fall, People of God, and the Church. All of these themes are dealt with in this book through his new marginality paradigm. The most impressive point for me is his last chapter regarding `creative transformation,' which emphasizes "overcoming Marginality through Marginality." His main point is that overcoming all structural and personal marginal experiences comes from love and patience as Jesus overcame his through these. This way, to shake the traditional norm through the marginal strategy, then, stimulates and challenges the people of center to move down or toward the margin. Through it, his final vision is making `Garden' where all different plants grow together in harmony. He insists:

"When centralist people understand that the center they seek is not real, they will be liberated from centrality and seek the creative center. When this transformation happens, centrality changes to marginality, and marginality changes to new marginality, and all people become marginal. Marginality is overcome through marginality, and all are marginal to God manifest in Jesus-Christ. When all of us are marginal, love becomes the norm of our lives, and service becomes the highest aspiration of our creativity. We then become servants to one another in love" (170).

I believe that Lee's theology is very practical for his Asian-American Christian community. It is a powerful theology because it provides his people clear `self-identity,' which is strongly needed today. What I believe is that the most severe struggle of immigrants is whether they have the meaning of life or not in a foreign land. Here, Lee's comment is insightful, "The ethnic minority churches, especially Korean-American churches, must rediscover or create their own identity as communities of marginalized people" (144).

Another valuable point of his theology is its stimulating role toward the traditional theology. Lee's work is a new paradigm and new perspective, reflecting the main theological themes through the perspective of marginality, which is seldom for the white-dominant theology. Actually, it insists that both traditional/white-dominant theology and ethnic minority-dominant theology are seeking the center and privilege today. He cries out that all Christians - both in center and in margin - should get the idea, not seeking the center but seeking the margin, moving from above to down and going out from the center to the margin, following what Jesus Christ did.

Moreover, his view gives me a new vision of harmony, which I believe is the ultimate form of the Kingdom of God. This is the prototype form of the church (Acts 2) and form of heavenly end time (Rev 7:9). God intended the Gospel for all race and nations when he created the world, and He gave us the variety of cultures to be used for His glory. Therefore, the context of the North America, as multi-cultural/ethnic situation is a wonderful chance to manifest this harmony.

Lee's book also lets me see what others - especially the dominant group - cannot see. His holistic view of `in-both' and `in-beyond' cannot be formed through the typical western cognitive style (dualistic, either/or). As an Asian, he clearly uses the integrative way of `ying/yang' in his theology. That is why his theology is unique and powerful. Another example of this that he can see what others cannot see as he points out the creative potential of marginality. According to him, "when people become the new marginality, they became the subject of salvation history" (152). This is the place of victimized immigrants' transformation. When the marginality gets the proper self-identity, their liminal stage can be the place of creative minority, who can become catalysts to transform the world (152-153). It is a very insightful discovery.

Meanwhile, I feel that his theology is somewhat radical. It is because there is a clear possibility to shake off all past theological paradigms through his new approach. For example, he asks people and church to follow his marginal perspective for doing theology, giving up the centrality and taking the marginality. His opinion sounds as if all traditional theology and church have been wrong and need to be corrected.

Nevertheless, I believe that this book is very unique which contains wonderful theological reflections. His perspective toward the issue of marginality is much needed and well developed. In fact, he is humble enough to admit that he is just a cornerstone and expect other's adding different stones toward the fuller expression of this theology (172). Personally, this book helps me a lot regarding the question, "What does it mean to be a marginalized person as an immigrant?" His reflection actually helps me to build up my `self-identity.' This can be a good starting point for my project which is from `who we are' to `where we are' and `for what we are.'

Jung Young Lee is a genius. He was a man before his time. His words will ring true even more so now, than it did in his day, as the world he endured was of greater marginalization for ethnic minorities, especially asian-americans.

The book is rich in many points, but to summarize poorly

The world is stuck in seeking to be the center. Individuals seek to be the center, to be dominant.

Christ broke that apart and lived at the margin, became marginal and sought for the marginalized.

We are called to live at the margin, become marginal, seeking for the marginalized.

It's a theology of servant-hood and community.

Centrality only corrupts and creates pain for its holders and its victims.

When all seek to serve and become marginal, the center will collapse, and all will be made equal, and all will be as one.

It is a beautiful vision, whether seen as practical or impractical.

Very thought provoking

This is one of those books where, as a reader, you probably will need much time to digest what the author has presented. Unlike many theological books, Jung Young Lee's emotional passions are included, revealing to the reader the foundations of his perspective. He knows firsthand the joys and sorrows of being marginalized.
