About the Author
Dr. Frederick P. Stutz is Emeritus Professor of Geography at San Diego State University. He received his Ph.D. at Michigan State University, his M.A. at Northwestern University, and B.A. at Valparaiso University. His research interests include Urban Traveler Behavior, GIS Disaster Evacuation of City Traffic, and U.S.-Mexican Border Area Travel Needs Assessment. He is currently working on a project involving Energy and Travel Sustainability—Space-Time Utility Measures for Urban Travel Purposes.

Barney Warf is Professor of Geography at the University of Kansas. He received his Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 1985. His current areas of research are political economy, social theory, producer services, financial markets, telecommunications, the geography of cyberspace, military spending, and international trade. He has authored or edited 5 books, 2 encyclopedias, and 100 journal articles.

Delivers some useful facts but extremely theoretically confused

I actually want to give this book 2.5 stars but can't. Anyhow it's OK but not great. A lot of the stuff in here is things that a person would know if they paid even a little attention to world issues. I guess it's fair to try to be comprehensive and some people have just got to start *somewhere* but I shudder to think who is graduating from college anymore. My most serious complaint is that, theoretically, this book is a mess, and I do mean a *mess*. At some times, neoclassical economic approaches are presented without criticism, including the ubiquitous supply / demand curve graphs, and at other times Marxist and even more radical constructivist views in the Marxist vein are emphatically asserted to be true, along with a mélange of other heterodox viewpoints. Now I am heterodox myself but this crap just doesn't make sense. For instance, at one point, the authors are dismissing the major arguments for protectionism in trade, but then criticizing the policies of the Bretton Woods institutions only a few pages later. Also, the authors should be made well aware that Bethlehem Steel is now defunct and the main site in Bethlehem proper has been converted to a casino. Get up to speed, guys.

Solid learning

Solid book on the world of Geography and Economics that pertain to it. It is a bit heavy with the complicated lingo and concepts at times, but I did take decent notes while reading which helped immensely. My professor was good to guide me through the book in class and as a result I am getting good grades. If this isn't your major or general expertise, it will get dull since it talks about the general economics and surrounding areas in geography.

I got this book as it was required for my World Ecomonics class. Luckily it is a easy and fun read, not just informative. The authors of the book have organized it well, and I've enjoyed the historical aspects as well the current information.

Mediocre

First, let me preface this by the disclaimer that I've grown up around dogs all my life, and participated closely in their training with my family and been to several obedience classes that adopted varying techniques.
I got this book primarily because I recently got a puppy who is more dominant and I was interested in her take on the "teaching your dog respect" claims.

It does have some decent basic training advice in it. It gives a ton of different command examples, explains why you need different but similar commands for things like "drop" vs "give" and "stay" vs "wait", but honestly, I found the approach outdated. For example: if your dog eliminates in the house she advocates dragging the dog back there, sticking his nose *near* it (not "in", at least...) and scolding him/her. This is is a seriously outdated training method that does nothing except confused the dog and give them bad associations of you. I am not opposed to corrections, don't get me wrong. However, if you don't catch the dog IN THE ACT, a correction is useless. Especially with a puppy.. they have the attention span of a gnat; they won't understand what you're correcting them about.

Also, while it is a 337pg book, if you download the pdf it is in large type with many graphics and spaces (no clue about the paperback). Another annoyance to me is that she spends about 1/6 of the book suggesting you purchase other things: her other books, other people's books, equipment she recommends, etc. (all of which there are hyperlinks to in the pdf). I appreciated her suggestions, to a degree... but her book was $19, she shouldn't be spending that large of a percentage of it telling me what else to spend money on... There was a lot of "this is important, but I'm not going to go into detail here. Buy this book." So I read through it in about 4 hours, maybe less.

Her approach to teach respect is pretty common sense, imo. Basically... be consistent and follow through. If you tell your dog to do something make sure he does it after the first instruction (once he knows it, of course). If he's being unruly, correct him. Make sure you use appropriate corrections (not so harsh that you're traumatizing him, but strong enough to get his attention/make something uncomfortable via loud noises, leash jerks, water sprays, etc.)Don't baby your dog or reward/comfort them for undesirable behaviors like fear, or adopt a "well, that was good enough" approach. Don't let him tell you what to do, and always demand something of the dog before giving something to the dog (a sit, for instance).

The "100 words" vary from vital knowledge to fun tricks to completely useless. Of course she covers things such as "sit" "stay" "leave it" "heel", etc. But a lot of her "words" are seriously reaching. For example: I have no desire to teach my dog the word "popcorn". Other words I found completely useless were: squirrel, birdies, doggy (meaning other dogs), puppy (for other puppies, which are different from other dogs!), kitty (though this could be useful if you have a cat, of course), cheese, etc.
SO MANY were also repetitious. For example, words 57-62 are: "Are you hungry?" "Want to eat?" "Want some food?" "Want your breakfast?" "Want your supper?" and "Want some water?". Personally, I can't fathom why a dog needs to know *all* of these, or why they came before grooming commands like "open", when the rest of the book seems to suggest that commands are listed somewhat by training order/importance. To me, it's enough to say "Food time" and have him know to go where he gets fed...which dogs pick up pretty naturally.
Then the last eight were for agility equipment. Which can be useful, but if you have no plans to do agility... not so much.
IMO, if you can't think of 100 different and useful commands then you have no business writing a book called "Teach your dog 100 English words" Make it 50 words.

To me, everything worth knowing in this book was either common sense, or things that can be found in free articles/youtube videos online... except for her personal opinions on the best leashes, books on subjects, etc. And, honestly, there are other dog trainer's whose opinions I would respect much more.

I would suggest rather than spending your money on this book you invest in a clicker (Studies have shown that dogs trained with clicker/marker training learned 50% faster than dogs who were just praised and treated because you can precisely time and "mark" the behavior) and spend a few hours on youtube/other dog training sites (Leerburg has some free videos, I personally really respect Michael Ellis' style, or dogmantics.com if you prefer non-intimidation techniques which can be awesome, but in my experience not as effective with dominant dogs), or even just google... AND sign up for obedience classes so you can get feedback in person from a professional. But that said, DO set up a plan, stick to it, and enforce. Once a dog learns a word, obeying you can't be optional if you want a trained dog.

Book is great! Consistency is key.

I am adding this review simply because the other review gives it a one star based on the weird pricing. I agree with her - weird thing going on with Amazon. I got the same deal on author's website as earlier this year couldn't even find copy on Amazon. To review the book itself - it's great! Some of the advice is contrary to things previously learned (now unlearning) in various obedience courses at pet stores and such. We've had several dogs, right now have 2 and these tips are working well for us. They are both larger,active dogs and we have been complimented on their behavior. I can assure you that I do not have loads of time to work on this as a busy mom who works part-time. Nonetheless, we have seen great improvement in our dogs and enjoyment of them with improved behaviors. We are still introducing new commands and it's going well. The techniques are also easy for our young daughters to follow through with which leads to great consistency - the key.

Title should be: "100 ways you could kill your dog"

I was a little disappointed with this book. The training methods seem reasonable-no problem there. But the author's obsession with every single thing in the universe being a mortal threat to your dog, you almost need to be on Xanax just to read it without having a panic attack.

(Don't spay too early or it'll get cancer....for heaven's sake don't spray your dandelions or you'll kill your dog....don't leave kitchen appliances laying around where they could fall off the counter, hit your dog in the head and kill it...commercial dog food is no better than poison...)

And my biggest peeve: According to Ms. Welton, if you have a job, you can't own a dog. Period.

I'll read the training parts, but her care advice is over the top, paranoid, and way too heavy on the guilt.

About the Author

Norman J Ashford was Professor of Transport Planning at the Loughborough University of Technology, England from 1972 to 1997. He is the holder of bachelor, master and doctorate-level degrees in civil engineering. Dr. Ashford worked as a civil engineer in Canada and taught at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Florida State University. He served as the Director of the Transportation Institute Division of Universities for the State of Florida. Dr. Ashford runs an aviation consulting company and has been active in the areas of airport planning, design, operations, and privatization on more than 100 airports in more than 40 countries.

Dr. Pierre Coutu is the President of Aviation Strategies International (ASI) where he leads and guides a multi-disciplinary, international network of civil aviation experts who leverage their experience to provide value-added, senior-level strategic advice and analysis to ASI's world clients. With more than 35 years of experience in the airports business, Dr. Coutu has worked with the Canadian Transportation Ministry in various capacities related to airport management and development as well as with the International Aviation Management Training Institute (IAMTI) as Executive VP and COO, from 1987 to 1998, during which the Institute graduated close to 5,000 aviation executives from 150 different countries. Dr. Coutu has also been speaking at worldwide industry events and teaching airport management within aviation MBA programs at universities including Concordia University (Canada), Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (China), and Krems Danau University (Austria).

John R Beasley graduated from the University of Oxford with a First Class Honors degree in Natural Sciences (Physics), is a Chartered Physicist, a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI). He worked for Barclays de Zoete Wedd (BZW) as an investment analyst, publishing major research covering the defense and software sectors. In 2001, Beasley founded his own consultancy, Analytical Decisions, offering decision-making and policy implementation support.

Valuable insight of airport operations

I bought the kindle version of this book for a month, rather than wait, I decided to post a preliminary review.

The authors are having strong academical background and practical experience in civil aviation, therefore they have written one of the finest books on airport operations I have ever read. Yet it is a very serious piece of writing, at once scholarly and erudite, while suitable for different level of people who are working in aviation industry. As such, it bears re-reading and serious study.

This is a book for somebody who wish to grab the full picture to understand the complexity of the airport operation systems, the reader could understand the area of passenger, freight, and aircraft handling, the airport viewpoint on airline scheduling, the safety and security issues, sustainable development and environmental capacity of airports, etc. All the things in this book is across the world, the proposition are followed the rule setup by governmental like FAA and international organization like IATA and ICAO. The book just doesn't bored like reading the manual, and I suspect it will be immensely useful to any of us who are willing to understand the logic of transportation, as they are working in same principle.

Dr. Ashford is a well known author in airport planning. When I first entered airport as a operations staff in 8 years ago, I learn a lot from his previous book - Airport Operations. It is a must-read for me. The Airport Operations 3/E contains a treasure trove of knowledge, in sum, I highly recommended this book for everyone who interested in this topic.

THE book on airport operations

This is the third edition of a unique book in the area of airports, where there has been a recent wave of new books. This book is unique in the sense that it brings the reader the closest to the reality of airport daily life. This feature makes it very valuable for (less experienced) airport operators and managers as well as for planners and designers , who are often unaware of many operational details. It is also highly recommended for students in air transport and related fields.

This third edition has been written by a somewhat expanded team of authors, lead by Norman Ashford, one of the most prominent authors of (text)books on airports. Compared to the first two editions (1984 and 1997) this one has three new chapters on airport safety management systems, operations control centers, and sustainability and environmental capacity. The new chapters, together with the refreshment and updates of the whole text reflect the reality of the complex ever-changing world of airports.

For years, friends and associates said that they enjoyed hearing stories about my experiences in and around the advertising business and suggested I write a book. I resisted, thinking that if anyone wanted to read about the ad biz, they'd rather read the thoughts and ruminations of someone from one of the a meccas like New York. But then I was reminded that while Seattle may not be the biggest market, it's definitely one of the coolest and most progressive. As Frank Sinatra would have said, "If I can make it there, I'll make it anywhere." My agency had the most successful thirty-year run of any agency in the history of this ultra-cool city. No agency in modern times had climbed to the top faster or stayed there longer. Perhaps success in Seattle did give me at least a modicum of credibility. Bolstered by that fact, I kicked around the idea of writing a "How to" book to help others succeed in this fascinating business irrespective of where they chose to ply the profession. That is, I kicked around the idea for a few days until I remembered why I had never been a huge fans of those books. Although my experience was limited, those I had read were too much like work. So being a creative guy, I decided to write a textbook that was both helpful and fun to read. After pounding out an outline, I sent it to a friend who is very smart, a great writer and someone not afraid to tell me when I'm being stupid. "Ron, you're being stupid," he said. "A textbook on advertising written by you would never get off the shelves. Write a true-life 'womb to tomb' story about your incredible career in advertising. The very idea that Ron Elgin could become a success at anything is not just funny, it's fucking hilarious!" So you won't find chapters promising to teach you the secrets of becoming a great presenter, or showing you the formula for guaranteed financial success, or giving you tips on client retention, or even a diagram showing how to button your fly. Instead, I share stories. True stories -- well, at least how I remember them. Anyway, my hope is that perhaps through this collection of bizarre but true stories, you can learn from my mistakes, benefit from when we did get it right, and most of all, just have fun reading about an incredible magic carpet ride.

One Huck of a Book!

Inside the playful and self-deprecating cover is a rollicking good read, filled with wonderfully told stories. Some contain valuable insights, others are unbelievably wild and crazy, and the rest are Dave Barry laugh-out-loud funny. Huckster is a big fat, fistful of fun.

As a former employee, I can’t help chuckling at Ron’s claim that he hired people “smarter” than him. It’s a great premise and characteristically clever approach. But if I was half as smart as Ron, I would have started an agency and persuaded him to help ME get rich! Still, ‘Huckster’ is a love letter to all of us he chose to work with, and proof we were part of something big.

Ron is a win-win guy if there ever was one. He built his success on the success of his people. Those who trusted and followed him learned from the best and shared in the rewards.

Surviving, let alone flourishing in Seattle’s ad business, particularly in the 80’s and 90’s, was a lot tougher than it was in NY or LA. With few large companies, small marketing budgets, and a focus on tactics and sales versus strategy and branding, Ron’s road to the top was a formidable challenge.

Here it was common to hear: “all we need is a basic brochure that looks nice, but is as cheap as possible”.

Ron: “I’m sorry to hear about your troubles. Are you just trying to stay afloat, or actually going out of business?”

Client: “What are you talking about? My company is doing great!”

Ron: “Really? Then why would you want to give the opposite impression to your audiences?”

‘Huckster’ will both enlighten and entertain. Don't miss it.

I Laughed Long and Loud!

Huckster is one fun read. It’s the story of Ron Elgin who along with his partner, Dave Syferd, started a scratch advertising agency in Seattle and grew their billings to $500 million by the time they finally sold. Elgin’s life story is wrapped up in this humorous and creative book, and although he says it’s not a “how to” manual, his story reveals his own excellent business practices such as hiring top notch people and delegating at the highest level. He is also quick to praise employees for their valuable contributions to the business.

Additionally, Elgin makes clear that running an ad agency cannot be done without the use of meaningful and appropriate expletives. Who could?

His stories of various accounts he acquired, worked on and yes, lost, are fascinating and illustrative of the wide mix of creative talent that Elgin Syferd was able to provide. Among the chapters I personally enjoyed the most was the one entitled, “And Then God Said…” It deals with Kirk Lanterman, the executive at Holland America with whom Elgin worked. The chapter describes their relationship and the work, but includes 15 pages of Lanterman’s extremely humorous and intimidating comments to fellow workers and colleagues. Elgin calls Lanterman’s wit “acerbic.” That would be an understatement. These are simply hilarious. Despite the put downs, Elgin describes Lanterman as a really fine person. This chapter is worth the price of the book all by itself. Elgin took good notes.

You don’t need to know anything about advertising to enjoy Huckster, although anyone who ever started a business would definitely find this book to be a joy. Hats off to Elgin and Dave Syferd for the work they did over the years, and special kudos to Elgin and his charming wife, Bonnie (who I’m sure was a pocket editor), for putting this book together. Five stars from this reader.

The author is not only a highly successful AdMan who has honestly shared his personal experiences and learnings from business, he is a gifted writer with the skills that will make you yearn to read his (hopefully) next book.

A well written expose of the charismatic excesses

Written from a British perspective, Roland Howard exposes many of the excesses of the Charismatic movement. From the beginnings of the Charismatic movement in the U.K.through the arrival of the Toronto Blessing and the movement's possible future. Detailed accounts of sexual, psychological ,and ministerial abuses abound. Yes people have died because of this movement as the sad case of Audrey Reynolds documents. Minuses: Howard uses too many acronyms. He misidentifies Rodney Harold-Browne as an American, he's actually South African.
