Book has more value than just in class

This book actually does quite a good job at explaining major concepts in capital markets. I initially bought it for a class on the subject with the intention of selling it later. However, I've kept it for future reference as I progress in my career.

There is a very through examination of the issues of risk and uncertainty made in this book as it is related to financial and money markets .However, there is an inaccuracy on pp.30-31 with respect to the views of J M Keynes.The author states that "...Keynes made a similar distinction (note-the author is referring to Frank Knight),arguing that there is risk that can be calculated and another sort of risk he labeled "irreducible uncertainty"."
Keynes never ever used the term " irreducible uncertainty" at any point in any of his published work. Uncertainty is not another kind of risk. Uncertainty means that the risk can't be calculated because there is a substantial information missing .Keynes dealt with this by following george Boole .He developed a Boolean approach based on indeterminate probabilities or interval valued probability in the TP. Knight never developed any technical approach to deal with uncertainty

This analysis of jazz criticism and its production is astutely self-aware. It critiques the critics, building a work of cultural studies in a time and place where the practice was virtually unknown. The authors reached radical conclusions―free jazz was a revolutionary reaction against white domination, was the musical counterpart to the Black Power movement, and was a music that demanded a similar political commitment. The impact of this book is difficult to overstate, as it made readers reconsider their response to African American music. In some cases it changed the way musicians thought about and played jazz. Free Jazz / Black Power remains indispensable to the study of the relation of American free jazz to European audiences, critics, and artists. This monumental critique caught the spirit of its time and also realigned that zeitgeist.

For Bishop--always wary of being pigeonholed and therefore reticent about naming her favorite contemporaries--it was a rare explicit acknowledgment of an informal but enduring artistic circle that has evaded the notice of literary journalists for more than forty years. Despite the private nature of their dialogue, the group's members--Bishop, Lowell, Jarrell, and Berryman--left a compelling record of their mutual interchange and influence. Drawing on an extensive range of published and archival sources, Thomas Travisano traces these poets' creation of a surprisingly coherent postmodern aesthetic and defines its continuing influence on American poetry.

The refusal of this "midcentury quartet," as Travisano calls them, to voice a formalized doctrine, coupled with their intuitive way of working, has caused critics to miss the coherence of their project. Travisano argues that these poets are not only successors to Pound, Auden, Stevens, and Eliot but postmodern explorers in their own right. In forging their own aesthetic, characterized here as a postmodern mode of elegy, they encountered significant resistance from their immediate modernist mentors Allen Tate, John Crowe Ransom, and Marianne Moore.

Jarrell, whom others of the group regarded as a critic of particular genius, was first described as a post-modernist in a 1941 review by Ransom that Travisano cites as the earliest known use of the term. The continual tension in their poetry between subjectivity and form, claims Travisano, reflects the plight of the fractured individual in a postmodern world. Thomas Travisano is Cora A. Babcock Professor of English at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. He is author of Elizabeth Bishop: Her Artistic Development (Virginia, 1988) and co-editor of Gendered Modernisms: American Women Poets and Their Readers.

Enduring scholarship

Elegantly meant and beautifully worded, Thomas Travisano's book evinces his love for the poems of this quartet of poets. He does something that's rare, perhaps too rare, in modern literary scholarship--he considers the aesthetics and poetics inherent in the poets' work with a respect usually reserved for 'thematics.' His scholarship is a marvel of idea and invention, the tone modest yet full of authority. Dr. Travisano is the perfect model for younger scholars in his stance toward his subject, reminding readers of the poets' greatness- the qualities of expression and in their complex relationships with their friends-without the self regard that so often taints scholarly work. The four authors are alive in Travisano's prose; they couldn't have a better scholar on their side.

Educators talk about kids "Allstar books". This was my 2nd graders Allstar book. I was worried about the 3rd grade shift from learning to read to reading to learn next year. This book transitioned her to the impassioned reader I always hoped shed grow into. Probably shaped my kid's future academic career more than anything to this point.
