suspenceful

I just finished reading this and had to write this review on this book. This book was even more suspenseful than the first one. I knew some of the things had to happen in this book. I knew Trevor would find her and it was not going to be good. I loved her courage. I bought this after I finished reading the first book. At first I wasn't going to and pick a book I already had but as. I read the last sentence I didn't waste anytime a couple minutes later I was reading this book because I had to find out how the story ends and what would happen to Trevor. I like this book a little better than the first. If you got the first story about Lily then spend the money and get this one also. I'm glad I did or I would be thinking for a long time what happened.

Absolutely nothing inappropriate

This review is actually for this book and its predecessor, He Loves Me Not. The author doesn't have a great writing style and the characters lack dimension but she does have a really good idea of how difficult it can be to escape from an abusive relationship; I know because it took me 18 years to get out of mine. The conflicting emotions that the heroine experiences are true to life. People who have never been victims of abuse often find it difficult to understand what makes it so hard to leave and once you do leave, why it's so hard to not go back and the author manages to capture, in a small way, those particular emotional conflicts. The heroine, in my opinion had things much too easy. She doesn't suffer from financial difficulties which makes her escape much simpler. Most abuse victims don't have the luxury of their own vehicle or a nice fat $100k bank account to live on, nor the luxury of being able to sell a deceased parent's home to add to that bank account. I had to laugh a little when Lily/Kate effortlessly drove away from Reno with no fear of running out of gas money, forked out money to rent a home, walked into a Doctor's Office and paid cash for her appointments and casually stopped by Wal-Mart to purchase a brand new crib and baby clothes...if only it was really that easy! They're not terrible books, but they're not great either. They're easy reads, and it only took me a few hours to get through each of them, although I never had a problem putting either of them down. I'll probably read more from this author because her books are inexpensive and have absolutely no profanity or inappropriate sexual passages and that is refreshing. These would probably be good books for older teenage girls to read to teach them to pay attention to the red flags they will most certainly see when they are dating.

The main character Lilly/Katy never grows. Keeps making stupid decisions that puts her child at risk. Wish I hadn't wasted my money giving this writer second chance.

You must definitely buy this book!

As an RF engineer, involved in Wireless Network Design and Implementation, I found this book the most resourceful in my personal library. It is a perfect blend of all Wireless Technologies, Cellular, Wireless and also IP. What I appreciated most was that the book covered all my needs. If you need to know antenna theory and digital modulation techniques, on top of Wireless technologies, you need not spend time and money on other texts. Great introduction, but clearly a first edition

I'm just finishing a semester-long course which uses this book as an outline and as a source for homework questions. Anyone with basic knowledge of analysis will have no problem picking up this book and learning a great deal about Fourier decomposition and transformations, but there are a few problems with it. The questions at the end of each section don't always make it clear exactly what is to be answered and what is to be assumed. Also, there have been a few questions that neither I, my classmates, nor my professor could solve, which leads me to believe that there are fundamental problems with a few of the questions (I could be wrong though ;) ) Finally, the last chapter seems to use different notation for some things than is used in the rest of the book, so be alert. Overall, the clarity of the material outweighs these flaws and if you have any interest in REALLY understanding Fourier and Wavelet series, get this book.

Very good except for some errors

The book is recomendable but it has got several errors. For example, the hint of the exercise 4.7 is not such "hint". Anymore found this or other errors?

Anyway, the exposition is clear and ordered and you will get a great insight on Fourier analyisis.

In this ambitious book, Olson delineates from an evangelical perspective what is and is not authentic Christian belief. Chapters feature such topics as the Bible, God, Jesus and the Church, beginning with an overview of orthodox belief about the topic, citing Scripture, the Church Fathers and noted Christian writers throughout history. Olson then devotes a section to heretical beliefs, and follows this with an examination of diverse non-heretical beliefs among orthodox Christians (including Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox believers, and most Protestants). He ends each chapter envisioning greater unity among Christians, despite honest disagreements. While marred by some redundancy and excess verbiage, Olson's writing renders many complex theological concepts surprisingly accessible. And in his attempts to separate heresy from right belief, he acknowledges that those who adhere to beliefs he labels erroneous are usually sincere Christians (he cites wrong belief among fundamentalists, charismatics, liberal Christians and various sects). Attempting to mediate among the myriad dogmas, doctrines and opinions of orthodox Christians is no easy task, and Olson's descriptions of certain right beliefs and heresies (such as the psychological analogy for the Trinity and modalism) are sometimes barely distinguishable. Despite these and other small logical problems, Olson's book contributes greatly to contemporary evangelicalism not only in its impressive survey of many theologies, but also in its use of "The Great Tradition" of Christian belief as an essential guide to orthodoxy.

In this exemplary treatment of historical Christian theology and the development of belief, Olson (theology, Truett Theological Seminary, Baylor Univ.) succeeds in presenting what he posits as a "very basic, relatively comprehensive, nontechnical, nonspeculative one-volume introduction" to the subject. Olson works best at "affirming a strong central core of identifiable Christian belief," concluding that "beliefs matter, but not all beliefs matter equally." An evangelical Christian who is well versed in the variety of Christian beliefs-from Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism to Protestantism and others that fall under the heading of "esoteric Christianity"-he compares and contrasts various traditions in brief and simple language, illuminating complex doctrinal debates such as the Trinity, the nature of God, salvation, and humanity. He employs an informed rhetoric, showcasing a Christianity "that allows for great diversity and variety about every detail." While not heavily into scholarly apparatus, he footnotes and cites where necessary. Teachers who want to cover a broad spectrum of Christian beliefs should seriously consider this as a textbook for their courses. Its reasonable price and thoughtful, comprehensive perspective make it a compelling purchase. Highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

Extremely well-written, readable. Here, you can learn about airfoil (hydrofoil) theory in detail, all the way through induction effects (drag and change of angle of inflow). I read it to understand outboard racing propellers. There's is no tractable theory of the latter because of asymmetry, and because racing propellers are surfacing propellers. So you learn what you can from airfoil theory and the rest is engineering via the seat of the pants, try something and then test it to see how it works. I did that for 9 years and set 3 APBA OPC speed records along with winning 6 National Championships, so the method worked pretty well in practice for me but left the most interesting questions about what propellers are doing unanswered.

Arrived on time, perfect condition.

An awesome book from professor John Nicholas Newman from the MIT Center of Oceanic Engineering, it covers all the important knowledge of Hydrodynamics, however I wouldn't recommend it for beginners.

If you never studied fluid mechanics before I recommend reading the book Fluid Mechanics from White.

Classic Study on Phonics vs. Whole Language

This is an update to Chall's classic that assessed the basal (basic beginners) reading series created by the publishers for our public schools. Has been influencial (unfortunately not enough). Strongly recommend to give overview of phonics, its advantages over Whole Language. Is textbook on the topic, not workbook. Also gives historical perspective. As Chall notes individual are continuously rediscovering what language experts in past decades have already known about the advantages of various aspects of phonics.

In 1955, Rudolf Flesch published WHY JOHNNY CAN'T READ: AND WHAT YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. It was almost universally condemned by teachers, but parents praised it and it became a huge bestseller.

Because the controversy Flesch started wouldn't go away, Jeanne S. Chall was commissioned by a foundation to study all available evidence on teaching children to read English. She reviewed all published studies, visited classrooms in both in the U.S. and Britain, and came to an unambiguous conclusion: begining reading instruction works best when it concentrates on "code-emphasis", otherwise known as phonics.

In the eighties, Chall published an updated version, reviewing all research done since her first edition. Conclusion: phonics works best, and the improvement in reading scores since the mid-sixties was due to the increased emphasis on phonics.

In the late nineties, yet a third edition. Conclusions: the de-emphasis on phonics since the eighties had led to a deterioration in reading scores. All available evidence showed that only phonetic methods work for reading teaching. The alleged evidence disputing this was methodologically unsound, and worthless. Phonics is the only way to go.

THE GREAT TRAGEDY OF READING INSTRUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES IS THAT SOME PEOPLE, FOR POLITICAL/IDEOLOGICAL REASONS, REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THESE FACTS, AND FREQUENLY LIE ABOUT THEM. THEY DO PHONY 'STUDIES' THAT DON'T MEASURE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF READING INSTRUCTION, THEN USE THEM TO 'PROVE' THAT PHONICS DOESN'T WORK. THEY ALSO TAKE NON-PHONETIC METHODS AND CALL THEM PHONICS, SO THEY CAN FOOL CONCERNED PARENTS.

If you want to find out what phonetically based reading teaching IS, and whether your children are really being taught phonetically, get a copy of this book and read it. If you then find out they aren't being taught properly, you have two choices: 1) use Flesch's book, or Diane McGuinness's WHY OUR CHILDREN CAN'T READ, and use them to teach your child, or 2) buy Roberta Pournelle's (Mrs. Jerry Pournelle)'s computer program, and use it to teach your kids to read.

Btw, Flesch, McGuinness or Pournelle also work for adults with reading difficulties.

About the Author

Matthew Olson earned his undergraduate degree in 1973 at The University of California, Davis, and completed his PhD in Experimental Psychology at The University of Michigan in 1977. He joined the faculty at Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 1977, where he continues to enjoy teaching undergraduate students and writing.

Get the 7th edition

I had the opportunity to compare the 7th and 8th edition and all the chapter titles/subheadings are almost identical. Even the page numbers are within 5 pages apart. The text is fine, I just don't want other students to pay extra for the same material.

This book is very thorough and describes each theorist without bouncing around to the point of confusion. I was able to really learn about each one and how they influenced each other. I will be keeping this book for future reference.

Awesome Book!

Very easy to read and follow. Information in the book was very retainable. I wish the book was a little more specific but for the class I took it was more than good enough. I also wish that there were more examples for certain theories and concepts.
