As an introductory book, "How Patterns Work" has been designed to work as a companion alongside more complex pattern drafting books. In a way, the first half of the book is almost like a long form dictionary of pattern terms to help provide a thorough explanation of all the different features of patterns such as grain lines, seam allowances, darts and notches. All of the examples are discussed in relation to how the pattern will ultimately be sewn, so that the principles become more relevant to real sewn garments.

The first section of the book will answer questions such as:

• What are darts and how do they work with the curves of the body?
• What is seam allowance and how much should you add to your pattern?
• How are body measurements used to create accurate patterns?
• What are blocks or slopers and how are they different to patterns?
• What do the basic blocks look like?

The second half of the book shows a range of pattern making changes that can be learnt separately and can then be applied in different combinations to any garment patterns to suit your own pattern making needs. The reason why these pattern changes have been shown away from specific garments is to enable you to focus on the logic behind the pattern change, instead of becoming confused by the actual shape of the garment, or being distracted by working out body measurements.

All of the examples listed below are shown using both the cut and spread, and the pivot flat pattern making methods, and then also shown as a draped section of fabric on a mannequin, allowing you to really see the pattern changes as both a flat pattern, and in a more tangible 3D form. The examples that are covered in this section include:

• Adding and removing a seam line.
• Moving the position of a dart.
• Turning darts into seam lines and vice versa.
• Increasing and decreasing volume evenly.
• Increasing and decreasing volume around a point.
• Using darts to increase volume.

While the book can often appear very simple, our approach has been that when you are really stuck and feel like you are not quite "getting it", then a longer explanation with detailed diagrams can help the idea to really click, making it easier to apply the same pattern change in future.

The illustrations are clearly developed, and together with the descriptions in plain language, make links evident between various parts of the flat patternmaking process in a way that is easy to follow. The absence of measurements throughout the text, further enable this text to be approachable for students who sometimes get overwhelmed by the mathematical aspect of flat patternmaking. I recommend this text alongside other flat patternmaking texts to enable various modes of learning in our first year flat patternmaking subjects. Great for the Beginner and Advanced

This book is a must have if you want to understand how patterns work in ANY design. It is a must have with any manual on how to create patterns. It is essential to understand how and why darts are used and where, for example, and this book epxlains that as well as many other construction issues. Just buying a book on how to make patterns is just that, it tells you how and sometimes a little bit about the why. Understanding why you do something for a certain effect, or should I say what you should do for a certain effect is explained in this text. So, buy this IN ADDITION to ANY how to make pattern book.

I am a self teaching myself to be a fashion designer and have reservations on enrolling on a dedicated school of fashion due to financial constraints. I have bought almost 60 books to date about fashion, tailoring, sewing etc. Anything that would help me become a fashion designer. It is overwhelming to me since this is all new and I don't know where to begin. I believe I'm a good illustrator but I'm still refining on my skills. This book to me seems to be the next step towards constructing my illustrations. I love it because it talks about the very basic terminology and principles in pattern making and helps me adopt a set of skills that I can work with for my own designs. It is a book I would be using a lot and I know it will help me understand all the more complicated pattern books that I have so far. Much simple and straight forward guide for me.

Easy read for success to happen in your life!

Easy quick read about 2 hours, to get the best simple tips on how to be in the flow of Universe and using serendipity and synchronicity to your favor. How to be aware of it, how to apply it. Some people are referred to as lucky, they are just in the flow and getting more of serendipity. This books also explains why you may not be there and how you can change the patters to get in there, so you can be lucky too. I highly recommend it. He encourages you to be more awake and aware to this happening and to awknowledge it each and every time with gratitude. Essential reading (but this translation is not too good)

I say this is essential reading, but this is more true for someone familiar with Goethe. This is not to say that the casual reader will not find something of value, but 'Maxims and Reflections' is as much a reflection of Goethe and what he held true and interesting, as it is a collection of "wise sayings."
I think it would be helpful to a potential reader to review here some of the Maxims and Reflections, with comments.
Some are simplistic: "Behaviour is a mirror in which everyone shows his image."
Some are interesting, and one will see the truth in them upon some reflection. These may not really educate, but they are interesting in themselves: "There is something horrifying about a man of outstanding excellence of whom stupid people are proud."
Some are statements of what most of us would agree with easily, but they are important because they shed light upon the man and his concerns. For example, we often see how concerned he is with certain kinds of people being dangerous: "Fools and intelligent people are equally undamaging. Half-fools and half-sages, these are the most dangerous of all."
Some are incomprehensible: "Work makes the journeyman."
Some are enigmatic, at least to me: "Wisdom is to be found only in truth."
Some are observations that are not too profound but which will serve as food for thought: "Human nature needs to be numbed from time to time, but without being put to sleep; hence smoking, spirits, opiates."
Some are simply personal beliefs, and we need to know that Goethe beleived such-and-such a thing: "Painting and tattooing the body is a return to animality."
Some are profound truths or observations, and will serve as food for a lot of thought: "Time is itself an element." "Mysteries do not as yet amount to miracles." "Truth is contrary to our nature, not so error, and this for a very simple reason: truth demands that we should recognize ourselves as limited, error flatters us that, in one way or another, we are unlimited." In this last one, for example, we get an idea about the kind of simple, pragmatic reasoning the great man often employed.
Some are statements by others, in other languages, and it is an interesting exercise to try and see why the great man included these in the Maxims and Reflections: " L'amour est un vrai recommenceur. [Love is truly a new beginning.] "
Some are classic maxims, which are oft-quoted, even today: "There is nothing more dreadful than active ignorance." This example also serves to show that the translation is really bad in places: that phrase *really* deserves to be translated "ignorance in action".
And some are difficult to comprehend - but when makes the effort, they turn out to be absolute gems: "The first and last thing demanded of genius is love of truth."

Extremely Dry

This is my first Goethe reading, and I was very unimpressed. I was turned on to Goethe after reading a couple insightful quotes used in articles, but found the book to be incredibly dry and uninspiring...not to mention below expectations for one of the most highly regarded German writers of all times. Puzzled, I found the quote that encouraged me to read Goethe in the first place...
"No one is more hopelessly enslaved, than the person who falsely believes he is free."
Not bad, right? Right...but this translation was from the *article* I read, not the book/translation being reviewed. In the book/translation being reviewed, the quote read as follows...
"No one is more a slave that the one who thinks he is free without being free."
Wow! Just flows off the tongue. Don't we think that a master of the German language would use stronger language? Wouldn't we expect verbage more similar to the former rather than the latter example? Wouldn't we expect one of the greatest writers of all time to paint a gripping visual rather than dribble out some wisdom?
I think so. I'm going to go out on a limb and trust centuries of readers and critics. 300 years can't be wrong.
The stark difference b/w the two examples leads me to believe that the translation we are reviewing is either very poor, or very literal. I am by no means a German authority (I have enough trouble with English) and I haven't researched this enough to draw any other conclusions, but I HAVE to give Goethe the benefit of the doubt. I think a different translation may be more moving.

This small book has held more inspiration and caused me to pause and reflect more than any other I have read. I find myself circling the number preceding the most poignant passages so I can return to them at a later time of need. It is as essential as the works of the great philosophers.
