She penned the first chapter of a romance novel just out of high school, but it took much study, many (varied) jobs, one ultra-understanding husband and three gorgeous children before she finally sat down to turn that dream into a reality.

Ava glanced out of the car window at the sparkling summer sunshine bouncing off the exquisite French countryside and wished herself a thousand miles away. Maybe a million. That would land her on another planet where no one knew her name. Where no one knew the man her father had expected her to marry was about to marry another woman, and felt sorry for her in the process.

'It's time you stopped messing around in Paris, my girl, and came home to Anders.'

That particularly supportive comment had come only this morning, making her blood boil. His condescending words filled her head, drowning out the singer on the car radio who was warbling about wanting to go home. Home was the last place Ava wanted to go.

Not that her father's anger was entirely unexpected. Of course he was disappointed that the man she had been pledged to marry since she was a child had fallen in love with someone else. The way he'd spoken to her—A woman your age doesn't have time to waste!'—as if turning thirty in a year meant that she was over the hill—made it seem as if it was her fault.

But Ava wanted to fall in love! She wanted to get married! She just hadn't wanted to marry Gilles—a childhood friend who was more like a brother to her than her own—and he hadn't wanted to marry her. The problem was they had played along with their fathers' archaic pledge for a little too long, sometimes using each other for a fill-in date when the need arose.

Oh, how her father would love to hear that… Somehow, after her mother's death fifteen years ago, her relationship with him had disintegrated to the point where they barely spoke, let alone saw each other. Of course if she had been born a boy things would have been different.

Very different.

She would have had different choices. She would have been Crown Prince, for one—and, while she had no wish at all to rule their small European nation, she would at least have had her father's respect. His affection. Something.

Ava gripped the steering wheel of her hatchback more tightly as she turned onto the narrow country lane that ran alongside Chateau Verne, Gilles's fifteenth-century estate.

For eight years she had lived a happy, relatively low-key existence in Paris; finishing university and building her business, stepping in at royal functions when her brother Frederic had been absent. Now that Gilles, Marquis de Bassonne, was set to marry a friend of hers, she had a bad feeling that was all about to change.

Ava crinkled her nose at her uncharacteristically gloomy mood. Gilles and Anne had fallen in love at first sight two months ago and were happier than she'd ever seen either one of them before. They completed each other in a way that would inspire songwriters and she wasn't jealous.

Not at all.

Her life was rolling along just fine. Her art gallery, Gallery Nouveau, had just been reviewed in a prestigious art magazine and she was busier than ever. It was true that her love-life was a little on the nonexistent side, but her break-up three years ago with Colyn—the man she had believed she would eventually marry—had left her emotionally drained and a little wary.

At nearly twenty years her senior he had seemed to her to be the epitome of bourgeois intellectualism: a man who didn't care about her heritage and loved her for herself. It had taken a couple of years to figure out that his subtle criticisms of her status and his desire to 'teach' her all that he knew made him as egotistical and controlling as her father.

And she really wished he hadn't popped into her mind, because now she felt truly terrible.

The only other times she'd felt this miserable had been during gorgeous evenings wandering by herself along the Seine, when she was unable to avoid watching couples so helplessly in love with each other they couldn't walk two paces without stopping to steal another kiss.

She had never felt that. Not once.

She frowned, wondering if she ever would.

After Colyn she had been determined only to date nice men with solid family values. Men who were in touch with their feelings. But they hadn't inspired much more than friendship in her. Thankfully her business kept her too busy to dwell on what she lacked, and if she was getting older…

Pah!

Stamping on even more moodaltering thoughts, she adjusted the volume dial on the radio and wasn't at all prepared when she put her foot on the brake to slow down for a bend in the road and nothing happened. Imagining that she had put her foot on the accelerator instead, she'd moved to correct the oversight when the car hit a patch of gravel and started to slide.

Panicking, she yanked on the steering wheel to keep the car straight, but the car had gathered momentum and in the blink of an eye it fishtailed and rammed into some sort of small tree.

Groaning, Ava clasped her head where it had bounced off the steering wheel.

For a moment she just sat there. Then she realised the engine was roaring, took her foot from the accelerator and switched the car off. Her ears rang loudly in the sudden silence and then she caught the sound of one of her tyres spinning in midair. Glancing out through the windscreen, she realised her car was wedged on top of a clump of rocks and heather plants in full bloom.

Talk about a lapse in concentration!

She blew out a breath and gingerly moved her limbs one at a time. Thankfully the car had been going too slowly for her to have been seriously hurt. A good thing—except she could picture her father shaking his head at her. He was always telling her to use a driver on official engagements, but of course she didn't listen. Arguing with him had become something of a blood sport. A blood sport he was so much better at than her. It was one of the main reasons she'd snuck off to study Fine Arts at the Sorbonne. If she had stayed in Anders it would have been impossible to keep the promise she had made to her dying mother to try and get along with her father.

His earlier edict replayed again in her head. She couldn't return to Anders. What would she do there? Sit around and play parlour games all day while she waited for him to line up another convenient husband? The thought made her shiver.

Determined to stop thinking about her father, Ava carefully opened the car door and stepped out into the long grass. The spiky heels of her ankle boots immediately sank into the soft earth.

Great. As a gallery owner it was imperative that she always look impeccable and there was no way she could afford to ruin her prized Prada boots. Since she'd decided a long time ago not to take any of her father's money she didn't have any spare cash lying around to replace them. Another decision that had displeased him.

She stood precariously on the balls of her feet and leaned in to retrieve her handbag. Her phone had fallen out and when she picked it up she saw the screen was smashed. Unable to remember Gilles's mobile number, she tossed it back in the car in frustration. She could always call emergency services, but then her little accident would be all over the news in a heartbeat—and the thought of any more attention this week for 'the poor jilted Princess' made her teeth gnash together. Which didn't help her sore head. No. She'd simply have to walk.

But standing on the grassy verge with her hands on her hips, she realised just how far it was to the main gates. Her beloved boots would be destroyed. Not to mention how hot and sweaty she would be by the time she got there. This was not the graceful and dignified entrance she had planned to make. And if one of those media vans she had seen loitering a few miles back saw her.

Wondering just what to do next, she had a sudden brainwave. A sudden and slightly crazy brainwave. Fortuitously—if she could describe running her little car into a ditch in such terms—she'd crashed right near a section of the outer wall that she had played on with her brother Frederic and her cousin Baden and Gilles during family visits to the chateau in her childhood. Scaling the wall as revolutionary spies had been their secret game, and they'd even scraped out footholds to aid their escape from imaginary enemies.

Ava felt a grin creep across her face for the first time that day. She had to concede it was a tad desperate, but with Gilles's wedding only hours away that was exactly what she was. And, anyway, she had always loved to climb as a kid; surely it would be even easier as an adult?

'There's a woman stuck on the south wall, boss. What do you want us to do with her?'

Wolfe pulled up in the middle of an arched hallway in Chateau Verne and pressed his phone a little tighter to his ear. 'On the wall?'

'The very top,' repeated Eric, one of the more junior members of Wolfe's security team.

Wolfe tensed. Perfect. Most likely another interfering journalist, trying to get the scoop on his friend's extravagant wedding to the daughter of a controversial American politician. They hadn't let up all day, circling the chateau like starving buzzards. But none had been brazen enough to go over the wall yet. Of course he'd been prepared for the possibility—the reason they now had this little intruder in hand.

'Name?'

'Says she's Ava de Veers, Princess of Anders.'

A princess climbing over a forty-foot brick wall? Wolfe didn't think so. 'ID?'

'No ID in her handbag. Says she had a car accident and it must have fallen out.'

Clever.

'Camera?'

'Check.'

Wolfe considered his options. Even from inside the thick walls of the chateau he could hear the irritating whine of distant media choppers as they hovered just outside the established no-fly zone. With the wedding still three hours away he'd better extend the security perimeters before there were any more breaches.

'Want me to take her back to base, boss?'

'No.' Wolfe shot his hand through his hair. He'd rather turf her back over the wall than give her even more access to the property by taking her to the outer cottage his men were temporarily using. And he would—after he had established her identity and satisfied himself that she wasn't a real threat. 'Leave her where she's perched.' He was about to ring off when he had another thought. 'And, Eric, keep your gun on her until I get there.' That would teach her for entering a private function without an invitation.

'Ah…you mean keep her on the wall?'

When Eric hesitated Wolfe knew right then that the woman was attractive.

'Yes, that's exactly what I mean.' For all he knew she could be a political nutcase instead of an overzealous journo. 'And don't engage in any conversation with her until I get there.'

Wolfe trusted his men implicitly, but the last thing he needed was some smoking Mata Hari doing a number on their head.

'Yes, sir.'

Wolfe pocketed his phone. This would mean he wouldn't be able to start the pre-wedding game of polo Gilles had organised. Annoying, but it couldn't be helped. He'd offered to run security for Gilles's wedding because it was what he did, and the job always came first.

Once outside, Wolfe found Gilles and his merry band already waiting for him at the stables, the horses groomed and saddled and raring to go. Wolfe ran his gaze over the roguish white Arabian that Gilles had promised him. He'd missed his daily gym workout this morning and had been looking forward to putting the stallion through his paces.

Hell, he still could. Taking the reins from the handler, he swung easily onto the giant of a horse. The stallion shifted restlessly beneath his weight and Wolfe automatically reached forward to pat his neck, breathing in the strong scent of horse and leather. 'What's his name?'

'Achilles.'

His mouth quirked and Gilles shrugged. 'Apollo was taken and he's a bloody contrary animal. You should enjoy each other.'

Wolfe laughed at his aristocratic friend. Years ago they had forged an unbreakable bond when they had trained together for selection on an elite military task force. They'd been there for each other during the tough times and celebrated during the good. Inevitably Gilles had started sprouting reams of poetry and Greek myths to stay awake when they'd spent long hours waiting for something to happen. By contrast Wolfe, a rugged Australian country boy, had used a more simple method. Sheer grit and stubborn determination. A trait that had served him well when he had swapped special ops for software development and created what was currently the most sophisticated computer spyware on the planet.

Wolfe Inc had been forged around that venture, and when his younger brother had joined him they'd expanded into every aspect of the security business. But where his brother thrived on the corporate life Wolfe preferred the freedom of being able to mix things up a little. He even kept his hand in on some of the more hairy covert ops some governments called consultants in to take care of. He had to get his adrenaline high from something other than his beloved Honda CBR.

'Always the dreamer, Monsieur le Marquis,' he drawled.

'Just a man who knows how to have balance in his life, Ice,' Gilles countered good-naturedly, calling Wolfe by his old military nickname. He swung onto the back of a regal-looking bay. 'You should try it some time, my friend.'

'I've got plenty of balance in my life,' Wolfe grunted, thinking about the Viennese blonde he'd been glad to see the back of a month ago. 'No need to worry your pretty head on that score.'

Achilles snorted and tossed his nose in challenge as Wolfe took up the reins.

'I won't be joining you just yet. I need to check on an issue that's come up.' He kept his tone deliberately bland so as not to alarm his friend, who should be concentrating on why he was signing his life away to a woman in matrimony rather than why a woman was currently sitting on one of his outer walls. 'Achilles and I will join you in a few.'

The horse pulled against the bit and Wolfe smiled. There was nothing quite like using all his skills to master a difficult animal, and he wondered if Gilles would consider selling him. He already liked the unmanageable beast.

Ava had to attend the wedding of her ex-fiancee. It wasn't a hardship - she and Gilles had been friends all their lives and they'd never really had a relationship. It was just assumed they'd marry someday, but he found someone to love - and that meant Ava had to pretend she was putting on a brave face, even if she was secretly thrilled for her old friend. If she had to be completely truthful, she was also a little jealous that he'd found the thing she never had. True love.

Wolfe and Gilles were also old friends, but he and Princess Ava de Veers had never met. He's tasked to head up security at his pal's wedding, so when he gets a call about the woman scaling the wall to get onto the property he has to investigate. Paparazzi have been circling, and it was just a matter of time before they tried something desperate. Turns out that Humpty-Dumpty-ess was who she claimed to be. But apparently, being a princess didn't translate into having a meek and subservient personality.

Wolfe was heavy-handed and infuriating, and he thought she was too flippant and sassy for her own good. So when Gilles asks him innocently to keep an eye on her neither of them want to get near each other. But when the groom learns about their encounter at the edges of his property, he figures they'll work it out on their own.

Of course, when the magnets (Ava and Wolfe) are flipped, they can't seem to stay apart - and when a tragic event points back to danger headed Ava's way, Wolfe is assigned to be her bodyguard by the King himself. At least he can take solace in the fact that he doesn't sleep with his clients. What he doesn't take into account is that Ava knows her father is actually his client, and she can't seem to keep any distance between them either.

The steam factor in this story is quite high, and I loved the main characters. Their banter was off the charts, and I could almost feel the sandpaper-like sparks flying whenever they fought. Has everything a HQ Presents should have - and more. Highly recommended!

Her bodyguard
By Da_Cats_meow
This is a really sexy contemporary romance, based around a princess falling in love with her bodyguard. There was witty banter, an interesting mystery and a love that neither main character wanted to acknowledge. Overall it made for an interesting book and held my attention throughout the pages.

I liked it and will be looking for more of this authors books.

Duty At What Cost is a good book. Ava is a really level headed, not into living the princess lifestyle lady. While Wolfe is a love jaded millionaire/bodyguard. Together they but heads and have great chemistry, and find what they are really looking for in life.

Don't Bother Me Mom-I'm Learning, by Marc Prensky

“This book does a pretty good job of smashing the old argument that video games are harmful to children. Instead, it fills the void with statements showing how gaming can teach advanced problem solving, language and cognitive skills, strategic thinking, multitasking, and parallel processing. All of which are skills vital to survival in the increasingly technocratic 21st century. Backed up with solid research, demonstrating the accelerated formulation of these skills, the book looks at topics such as Military use of games to teach strategy, laparoscopic surgeons who play games as a "warm-up" before surgery, and business leaders who played games growing up, to hone their skills. The book is packed with positivity about gaming, and consistently moves to address parental concerns such as addiction, social isolation, or aggressive tendencies."--Virtual Worldlets

From Scientific American
As kids spend ever more time in the virtual world, the debate over whether video games foster harmful or helpful real-world habits rages. Marc Prensky, an educational software developer, is pro-game. In "Don’t Bother Me Mom—I’m Learning!", Prensky maintains that kids "are almost certainly learning more positive, useful things for their future from their video and computer games than they learn in school!"

Prensky wants to ease parents’ fears by describing how kids see gaming and what they learn. "[P]retty much all the information that parents and teachers have to work with is a lot of speculation, conjecture, and overblown rhetoric about the putative negative aspects of these games," he writes. Unfortunately, his counterstrategy is to throw together a similarly speculative mix in defense.

Prensky presents an opinionated argument filled with anecdotes, a few studies, and quotes pulled from published news stories. There is no evidence too specious: he cites a recent study that found younger, newer radiologists were more accurate in reading mammograms than older, more experienced doctors and asks, "Could the higher visual acuity gained from playing video games be at work here?" How can the reader know, when Prensky didn’t talk to the researchers to find out if the study was trying to answer this question?

He also takes the easy road in response to studies that find a link between aggressive behavior and violent video games: "Absolutely no one can say, when all the complex factors in a single child’s life are taken into account, whether any individual child will be negatively influenced overall." Of course not. The question, however, is whether video games are a risk factor for aggression and, if so, to what extent.

Nor will Prensky concede that there could be anything wrong with new technology. Writing about cell phones, he says that "the first ‘educational’ use students implemented for their cell phones was retrieving information on demand during exams. Educators, of course, refer to this as ‘cheating.’ They might better serve their students by redefining open-book testing as openphone testing." It is not hard to believe that children are learning problem-solving skills and hand-eye coordination from video games, as Prensky and others have written. Nor are all video games about killing things. But parents who have concerns about potential negative effects will be hard-pressed to fi nd thoughtful, well-researched answers here. —

Aimee Cunningham

From Booklist
Prensky debunks the accepted wisdom that video games are harmful to children. Instead, he contends that games can teach a multitude of skills, including problem solving, language and cognitive skills, strategic thinking, multitasking, and parallel processing. He cites research showing the benefits of games in teaching skills children will need in a twenty-first-century economy, pointing to the military use of games to teach strategy, laproscopic surgeons who play games as a "warm-up" before surgery, and entrepreneurs who played games growing up. Better yet, Prensky details positive attributes of popular games, including the controversial Grand Theft Auto, and addresses parent concerns about children becoming addicted, socially isolated, or developing aggression because of games. He offers recommendations for particularly beneficial games as well as Web sites to advance parent learning, and provides sound advice on bridging the gap between what he calls the young digital natives and the older digital immigrants. Parents and teachers will appreciate--and enjoy--this enlightening look at video and computer games. Vanessa Bush

Advice for Digital Immigrants
By Timothy Haugh
This is a book I feel all parents should read. Though I'm what Prensky would call a "digital immigrant," my accent isn't too thick. I may be nearing 40, but I got involved with computers as they came around and have never been afraid of technology. Gaming, Internet, etc.--I love it all. And, despite the fact my gaming time has reduced as I've gotten older, I've never really understood the hysteria over computer games.

For parents, this book is a great primer about video & computer games. It makes a case for why these games benefit children but, more importantly, it explains a lot of the gaming & computer jargon and gives examples of a lot of the popular software. If a parent really wants to make an effort to understand what interests their child about computers, this book is a great place to start. It also gives parents encouraging advice on how to connect with their children through these games.

I used to be quite a gamer myself (I leaned towards the strategy games like Civilization and Railroad Tycoon). After reading this book, I went out and bought Civilization IV (and The Sims for my wife) and rediscovered what I loved so much about them. Hopefully, when my children get to the age when they want to play computer games, I'll be able to participate with them on some level.

On the other hand, as a veteran teacher, I'm not convinced by some of his conclusions about the educational value of these games. I agree that these games are certainly not detrimental, any more than other "traditional" child pasttimes. (Any activity--reading, sports, etc.-- can be detrimental if done exclusively and to excess. As parents, it is our job to monitor all our child's activities and press them for moderation when we see them slipping into excess.) I agree that they can develop skills that are useful for children. I agree that technology & modern culture are rewiring our children's brains to be different and we must accept and deal with that (particularly teachers).

Still, I have yet to see a game that truly imparts curriculum in an effective manner. Civilization is a great game & offers great talking points to a history teacher but it cannot teach history effectively. Perhaps there will be truly dynamic games in the future that will teach curriculum well but, for all my support of technology, I see it as a tool, not as a guide. Like all tools, it can be used well or poorly but, as always, it goes back to the human hand that controls it.

But, despite these quibbles, I must give credit where credit is due: Prensky has written a very good book here. He opens our eyes to the importance of understanding these games. They are not going away and, with a little effort, both parents and educators can get a little more insight into young people today. Some of that effort should be put into reading this book.

Nails It--Secretary of Education Needs to Read This Book
By Robert David STEELE Vivas
I was introduced to the author's work on Digital Natives by a very smart and unusually open-minded colleague at the National Geospatial Agency, and I am hooked as well as relieved.

The greatest complement I can give this book is that my 15-year old, a master of Warlock, saw this book come in the door and immediately took it away from me and read it overnight. He gives it high marks.

This is also the book that inspired me to take Serious Games and Games for Change *very* seriously. Most gamers do not understand the need to work toward an EarthGame that includes actual budgets and actual science, but Medard Gabel of BigPictureSmallWorld gets it, and that's enough for me.

The list of games provided at the end by the author, to create a serious game home learning environment, is priceless. Some may be overtaken by events but the bottom line is that digital learning is vastly superior to rote learning in schools.

I am a participant in three Hacker communities--Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) based in New York, Hac-Tic based in Amsterdam, and Hackers/THINK based in California. I have met thousands of hackers over the years, and I am certain that the best and the brightest are not those with straight A's in the current school system, but those that tune out the high school regime by their junior year, and start learning what they want to learn on their own. My oldest son just won first prize in the Fairfax County digital music content, representing his school, but he will not graduate because he refuses to spend time on Algebra 2. He has very high SAT scores, will pass the GED with an almost perfect score, and will take digital music and digital art courses at three colleges in the DC area as a non-degree candidate. I go on at length here because this is both very personal for me, and also a national disaster--our entire curriculum is so out of date, and taught by so many drones, the few master teachers not withstanding, that I completely understand why our national ranking in math and science is out the window, why we have fallen to 7th on the national innovation scale, behind three Nordic countries and three Asian countries.

I admire this author. In a most positive manner, he is telling us the Secretary of Education is quite naked, and what we can do about it. This is a foundation book for any parent of "digital natives."

Good news from an expert who's got it right.
By Bob Collier
"Don't Bother Me Mom - I'm Learning!" is a vital book to read if you're the least bit worried about the computer and video games your children are playing (or would like to play).

There are, however, many aspects to this book that make it much more than an enlightening and positive response to all the objections, criticisms, negative opinions and fears that surround the world of digital gaming - it's an equally important read if you want to know what's happening in the rapidly changing world of teaching and learning.

Of particular interest to me as the father of a home educated boy was the mention in the book of developments in the application of games technology to the school curriculum - including a little something called "disintermediation", or 'cutting out the middleman', a subject I've written about myself.

To be honest, I was practically bouncing up and down with excitement as I read of the possibilities for learning and self-development that are emanating from the most recent advances in video gaming technology. The potential now unfolding is absolutely thrilling.

But, even if you're not as ready as I am to share Marc Prensky's enthusiasm for computer and video games as a means of educating and preparing our children for success in the modern world, you'll discover at the very least from reading "Don't Bother Me Mom - I'm Learning!" that what you may have been reading or hearing in the media about the games melting our children's brains and turning them into violent zombies has been both highly selective and greatly exaggerated.

Something that quickly became apparent to me as I read this book was that negative opinions about computer and video games tend to come from people who don't play them! Indeed, it seems to be that many parents who are worried about the games their children are playing don't actually know what it is they're worried about.

Both of my children play computer and video games. Without restrictions of any kind.

My daughter started playing video games at the age of six. Her mother - yes, folks, her mother - bought her a Sega Master System II and all three of us ended up happily playing Alex Kidd in Miracle World for hours on end every day until we'd completed the game. Then we bought some more games and haven't looked back.

My son Pat has been playing video games since he was three. He started with Mario the fat plumber on the Nintendo 64. We still have the N64. Pat now also has a Game Cube and a Playstation 2 and plays Empire Earth and RuneScape on the PC and various mini-games he finds on the internet.

Computer and video games are the biggest passion in my son's life right now, and I think it would be most odd if I didn't know at least a little bit about every game he plays. Because I play them, too!

My own interest in video games goes back to playing Pong, Space Invaders and Asteroids in various pubs I frequented in Sydney when I lived there in the mid-1970s to mid-1980s (in my pre-parenthood days).

As Marc Prensky explains clearly and comprehensively in "Don't Bother Me Mom - I'm Learning!", "games are NOT the enemy". Games are a medium. TV is a medium. Books are a medium. Did you know that even the piano was once considered by many to be dangerous new-fangled technology?

Though it certainly does seem to me at times that there's a very questionable motive behind the making of certain individual games, of course, that really is no different to the questionable motives behind the making of certain movies or TV programs, or the writing of certain books, and so on.

So, as with movies, TV and books, it's crucially important to separate the medium from the message. To optimise the positive qualities of the medium and exercise informed choice as far as the message is concerned. Which, no surprise, requires parental involvement - something that Marc Prensky advocates throughout his book, despite what its title might suggest.

In fact, this is one of the book's great strengths. It's a book of solutions for parents. It does acknowledge the problems and it does offer thoughtful, experience-based advice on how we can develop a more positive and helpful perception of our children's love affair with computer and video games and find ways to move forward and upward together with them into a new world of opportunity and accomplishment.

Marc Prensky's knowledge and understanding of the Brave New Digital World is truly awesome and I, for one, as a fifty-something with a 10-year old "Digital Native" son, am deeply grateful to him for his positive contribution to my life.

If you have a child who plays computer and video games, I hope you'll read this book. For reassurance, if that's all you need - or for mind expanding inspiration if you're ready for it. You'll discover plenty of that in its pages.

Just know from the start that it wasn't supposed to go like this. All we wanted was to get near them. That's why we got a room in the hotel where they were staying.

We were not planning to kidnap one of them. Especially not the most useless one. But we had him-his room key, his cell phone, and his secrets.

We were not planning on what happened next.

We swear.

Praise for Kill the Boy Band

"Although teen readers will identify with Sloane's brand of solemn spunk, Moldavsky's tale of self-doubt, revenge, and atonement will appeal to anyone who's ever had the fortune-or misfortune-of being a "fan."- Booklist

" Boy bands gets the Heathers treatment in this madcap macabre.A sendup of the artificiality of
the fame-making machine from both sides, the novel's humor is mercilessly black, and no one comes up
smelling like roses."- Kirkus

"Moldavsky's debut is a dark-humored, tongue-in-cheek novel with elements of noir.The story's strength
is in its bitingly satirical look at the extremes of fandom and how reality can be an unwelcome intrusion
into carefully constructed fantasy worlds."- Publishers Weekly

About the Author
Goldy Moldavsky writes YA fiction from her hometown of Brooklyn. She studied journalism in college, where she got to interview some cool celebrities for her school paper. After a bit she realized it’d be more fun making up stories about celebrities, so that’s what she does in her writing. Some of her influences include Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the esteemed works of John Irving, and the Mexican telenovelas she grew up watching with her mother.

Have you ever loved a boy band?
By Pacey1927
I enjoyed this book. It was very snarky and over the top and really was a satirical look at fans of boy bands in today's society. I'm much older than the target audience here. My boy band was New Kids on the Block and a lot of this book still rang true. Wow, we girls sure can fall hard and lose our heads over the boy bands. I watched my stepdaughter do it with N Sync and now friends of my youngest son swoon over One Direction.

The book opens with four friends who have learned where there fave boy band The Ruperts are staying and have managed to get a hotel room in the same hotel. Oh and they manage to do it without any parents overseeing them. Suspend reality here ok; its worth it if you can. Somehow one of the girls manages to kidnap one of the Ruperts...unfortunately its the 'loser' boy of the group. You know how every boy band has one member who is just not quite that hot. Yet he is Apple's favorite...Apple is the overweight friend who is oblivious to the fact that her favorite Rupert is gay.

Anyway things spiral from here. The book is dark and funny and entertaining. I never imagined the different twists and turns the book would take. I definitely related to how the girls felt about their fave members. I thought the little touches, like that each boy had his own fragrance, and the hints that they didn't really like each other all that much. Again, this book and the entire fallout that takes place from kidnapping a Rupert isn't very believable but at the same time there is so much in this book that will be familiar and humorous to boyband lovers past and hopefully present. I do say hopefully present because I wonder if tweens/teens may be offended by some of the images of fans of boy-banders presented in this book.

I found it to be a funny page turner. It wasn't perfect due to some extremely over the top moments but it was fun.

I Think You Have to be a Fangirl
By OutlawPoet
Okay, straight out...I may have been the wrong audience for this one.

See, I was never a fangirl. Yes, I had the pictures in my locker of various hearthrobs. And, yes, I did have a fan club membership to a couple of shall-remain-unnamed people. (I still have some posters and pins in a box in the garage. Hey, they may be worth something some day.)

But I never, ever went the route of the rabid fans in this book. As a result, I found the girls hard to relate to, hard to understand, and hard to like.

I did laugh once in the book, but only once. The rest of the time I was scratching my head and struggling to understand the humor of it.

It's a slightly dark book and has a few uncomfortable things like fat-shaming, slut-shaming, gay-shaming - all in the name of humor and I think all the insert-word-here-shaming kind of did me in.

It was definitely a fast read, and I did want to know how it would all end, but I didn't particularly like the book. I will say this, though, the tiny bit of darkness in the end was good. I ended the book very satisfied with what had happened and with a definite smirk on my face.

But ultimately, not for me.

Funny Suspenseful Rollicking Book
By Monique Atgood
SYNOPSIS:
A group of teenage girl fans go to a hotel to stalk the members of a boy band. They ‘accidentally’ kidnap a band member, and the rest of the story involves a murder mystery and the girls and the boys in the band hiding the body.

How do you ‘accidentally’ kidnap an idol? Well..... it apparently involves extreme excitement on the part of the fan, and really bad security/judgment on the part of a band member who stepped into the hotel hallway for ice. Also stolen underwear. Seriously.

The book was really suspenseful, and confusing to the point that sometimes you wonder what’s going on, but it sorts itself out quickly. The author misleads, so you think one thing is happening, but it’s actually another thing all together.

All the members of the band “Rupert” are named “Rupert”, so they tell each other apart but their last names. But they only told their full last names one time, so you have to go by their initials, so it gets confusing, and hard to remember, and certain girls like “Rupert K”, but the reader thinks she likes “Rupert X or Rupert H”, so that’s the confusing part.

My 13.11 year old bought this book and absolutely loved it. She read it twice through and put it on her ‘to be read again’ shelf. This is her review.

Statistical Mechanics: Principles and Selected Applications (Dover Books on Physics), by Terrell L. Hill, Physics

"Excellent … a welcome addition to the literature on the subject." — Science
Before the publication of this standard, oft-cited book, there were few if any statistical-mechanics texts that incorporated reviews of both fundamental principles and recent developments in the field.
In this volume, Professor Hill offers just such a dual presentation — a useful account of basic theory and of its applications, made accessible in a comprehensive format. The book opens with concise, unusually clear introductory chapters on classical statistical mechanics, quantum statistical mechanics and the relation of statistical mechanics to thermodynamics. Then follows a wide-ranging, detailed examination of various applications. Chapter 4 deals with fluctuations. The fifth chapter treats the theory of imperfect gases and condensation, largely following Mayer's theory but also giving some new, alternative derivations and discussing in the final section Yang and Lee's theory. The sixth chapter is devoted to a discussion of distribution functions and the theory of the liquid state. Chapter 7 deals with nearest-neighbor (Ising) lattice statistics, while the last chapter discusses free-volume and hole theories of liquids and solids.
Written primarily for graduate students and researchers in chemistry, physics and biology who already have some acquaintance with statistical mechanics, the book lends itself to use as a text for a second course in statistical mechanics, as a supplement to a first course or for self-study or reference. The level is neither introductory nor highly sophisticated; the author has generally emphasized material that is not available in other books. In addition, selected bibliographic references at the end of each chapter suggest supplementary reading.

A must-read in stat mech
By Themis Matsoukas
This is the Dover edition of the 1956 book by Hill on Statistical Mechanics (it was followed by companion book in 1960, also available from Dover). The book is a readable exposition of the foundations and most important results of statistical mechanics. The intended audience is advanced students of statistical mechanics, however, some previous acquaintance with statistical mechanics is recommended. His follow up book, An Introduction to Statistical Thermodynamics (I've heard it referred to by some as ``baby Hill'') is a better starting point for the first-time student.

The book treats a small number of subjects (there are 8 chapters in total) but in detail (this review is based on the chapters I have read so far, 1-4 and 7).

The fundamentals are developed in chapters 1-4 which establish the ensembles, first from the classical Gibbs perspective (chapter 1), then from a quantum mechanical point of view (chapter 2). In chapter 3 Hill develops a generalized ensemble from which the microcanonical, canonical and grand canonical follow as special cases. This part ends with the discussion of fluctuations in chapter 4. The remaining four chapters are devoted to general applications: the treatment of imperfect gases and condensation (Mayer's cluster expansion), distribution functions, and lattice statistics.

Overall the book is very readable by anyone who has some previous exposition to statistical mechanics and the basic mathematical tricks in working with partition functions. There are some small problems. Chapter 7 (nearest neighbor lattice statistics) is uncharacteristically disorganized and unbalanced with respect to explanations relative to chapter 1-4. Notation is not always helpful. A large number of variables in bold and script letters make the reading of equations a chore. This chore becomes even more laborious by the small type of the book (I estimate that the main font is point size 10 or 9, if not less). Dover would do scientists a huge favor by reissuing the book in larger format.

Hill's strength is in not over-explaining things: all mathematical detail is made available to the reader who must then use make use of his/her own brain to make sense of it. For the most part this works well for anyone willing to put the effort (for those who want some guidance in reading about statistical mechanics, an excellent companion is Pathria's book).

A classic text
By Critic at large
This text is a classic. It is a bit dated, but the clarity of the presentation and the completeness make it a worthwhile addition to the bookshelf of anyone working in theoretical biophysics, physical chemistry or molecular physics.

Armenia and the Crusades, by Ara Edmond Dostourian, Krikor H. Maksoudian

This work is a translation of the Chronicle of the 12th-century Armenian historian, Matthew of Edessa. The Chronicle, which covers the period from 952 A.D. to 1162 A.D., principally deals with events taking place in Armenia and upper Mesopotamia, and also presents many references to major events in the Byzantine Empire and those areas conquered by the early crusaders. The author's aim is to explicate those parts of the Chronicle which are not clear; to elucidate the text by means of historical, geographical, bibliographical, chronological, and other references; and to compare and contrast the narration of events in the Chronicle with that of other historians, both contemporary and non-contemporary. The introduction discusses the historian's life, work, and attitudes. Co-published with the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research.

An Armenian Perspective on the Crusades
By Stefano Nikolaou
Years ago I read Steve Runciman's magnificent 'A History of the Crusades'. There was an appendix in volume 1 of the primary sources for the Crusades listed under languages. It was there that I first heard mention of the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa. I knew one day that I had to own that book.
Matthew of Edessa was an Armenian patriot with a strong moral compass. He was not afraid to criticise the violence he saw and often pulls no punches. He was especially critical of the Byzantine Emperors. He criticises the Emperor John Tzimiskes for assassinating Nikephoros Phocas.
The chronicle covers the years 952 to 1136. The years 952 to 1051 are based on earlier sources. The years 1051 to 1101 are based on the testimony of eye witnesses that Matthew talked to. Finally the years 1101 to 1136 are Matthew's own observations. In the introduction Matthew is stated to have died when the Danishmendid ruler Amr-Ghazi attacked Edessa in 1136. A continuation of the chronicle by Gregory the Priest brings it up to 1162.
There is an interesting account of the battle of Manzikert that is well worth reading. I also found the interactions between the Byzantine Church and the Armenians valuable. At one stage Matthew has the Armenian prince Gagik (Part II.30 - 42) give a long discourse in Constantinople in front of the emperor and the Byzantine clergy that denounces Chalcedonian christology. The emperor is described as finding no fault with Gagik's faith and the Byzantine clergy is stunned. I find this bit hard to believe.
This second edition is in paperback so affordable.

Intellectual Property Rights As Foreign Direct Investments: From Collision to Collaboration (Elgar International Investment Law Series)B

'The protection of intellectual property rights in international investment law has considerable potential for future development. This pioneering work is full of nuanced and insightful analysis. It is a must for academics and practitioners in the field.'
- Christoph Schreuer, University of Vienna, Austria

What is the level of convergence between the international investment law framework and the international legal regime regulating intellectual property rights? This discerning book examines the interface between intellectual property and foreign direct investments.

Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, the author scrutinizes the circumstances in which, and the extent to which, international investment law's traditional protective standards apply to intellectual property rights investments. After concluding that the TRIPS agreement has shortcomings in this respect, the author analyses intellectual property rights in the context of international investment law in light of traditional standards of protection including the protection against indirect expropriation, the National Treatment Principle, the Most-Favoured Nation clause, fair and equitable treatment, and the prohibition of performance requirements, while emphasizing the importance of transfers of technology within and to developing countries. These explorations contribute to the debates surrounding the fragmentation of international law arising from its expansion and diversification.

Scholars, students and practitioners in the field of international investment law, as well as those interested in the protection of intellectual property rights at an international level, will find this book to be a useful and informative read.

Pioneering
By Phillip Taylor MBE
A PIONEERING MONOGRAPH EXPLORING RELATIONS BETWEEN IP AND INTERNATIONAL INVESTMENT LAW

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

To what extent do the traditional protections and standards of international investment law apply to intellectual property rights investments? In an era of globalization, we continue to see an expansion and diversification of international law and consequently its fragmentation. These developments are the subject of increasing concern, of course, to owners of intellectual property as well as those who have invested in it.

Published by Edward Elgar Publishing Limited, this book by Lukas Vanhonnaeker of McGill University, Montreal, is described quite rightly as a pioneering monograph offering a detailed and carefully researched overview of the relationship between intellectual property and international investment law. The two are now ‘at a crossroads’, says the author, as a result of global economic activity and the expansion of international transactions involving knowledge-intensive products, often of considerable value.

Speaking very generally, owners of intellectual property face considerable risk when doing business with countries whose domestic laws offer inadequate protection to intellectual property rights. Such risks and shortcomings and the possible solutions, including international recourse, are discussed in detail in this book.

Vanhonnaeker outlines the guiding thread of this study as an exploration of the key question here, namely ‘what is the level of convergence between the international investment law regime and the international legal regime regulating intellectual property rights?’

The short answer, apparently is not much, or rather, not enough, which is rather unfortunate because we are talking about property rights here and the rights of owners of intellectual property to own and profit from their own creativity and ideas, whether in the host country or internationally.

The theoretical background with respect to these and related issues is expanded upon in Part I of the book, while
Part II focusses on the standard of protection against indirect expropriation. Questions of performance requirements, technology transfer and the piracy of intellectual property rights are examined in Part III. Part IV on ‘uncharted waters’ contains a synthesis of the various conclusions reached.

Judging by the impressively detailed footnoting throughout, the author has done an enormous amount of research and the book is replete with useful research references, plus tables of cases and international conventions and documents, together with a detailed index.

Then there are the numerous annexes offering a number of interesting statistics. For example -- did you know that the world’s top 10 counterfeited trademarks include Louis Vuitton, Nike, Hello Kitty, Adidas and Puma? If, as an IP lawyer or academic, you’d like to know more, you would do well to acquire this book, which certainly makes an important contribution to IP literature and scholarship.

The publication date is cited as at 2015.
